Is there a free and easy way to transfer favorites between Nuvi's?

I know MapSource can do it, but it is not free. You have to buy a map to use MapSource. I am changing to a new GPS unit, is there quick and easy way to transfer all my favorites to the new unit?

Get Mapsource at no cost

Get Mapsource on your PC at no cost:

Or without Mapsource, check this link:

yes

Connect the old unit to your computer. Open the \Garmin\GPX folder and copy Current.GPX
Disconnect old unit
Connect new unit
Open \Garmin\GPX
Copy the saved Current.GPX to the new unit labeling it TEMP.GPX

Favorites transferred at next Garmin boot.

Illiterate? Write for free help.

Extra_POI_editor is free.

Extra_POI_editor is free. Connect your Garmin via USB, open Extra POI and edit you favorites. Then save them to a new file on your PC. Now connect the other GPS, edit its favorites and then either merge or drop and drag the saved favorites into the current favorites. Save to GPS.

You may have to play with these steps, since this is from memory. But I have had to have my GPS replaced under warranty and used Extra POI to move my saved favorites.

I don't remember exactly, but this sounds right

Just copy the GPX file

I just copy the old GPX file to my PC. Delete the GPX file on the new unit...Copy the old GPX file to the new unit in the Garmin folder....Has worked for me many times.

gpx vs temp.gpx

This sounds like it directly contradicts the instructions to copy it and rename it to temp.gpx before rebooting the GPSr.

Is it no longer necessary to rename the copied gpx file to temp.gpx?

I am not sure....all I know this is the way I have always done it and it has worked great.

Yes, it needs to be renamed to Temp.gpx.

Not with 12xx series

Yes, it needs to be renamed to Temp.gpx.

I have a 1250 and it doesn't work if renamed temp.gpx. It has to be named current1.gpx.

temp.gpx

That's what I thought. But the poster I quoted apparently does not do so... and without apparent issue.

Favorites

I noticed some time back when I had a problem with replacing favorites. If you delete all favorites from unit and delete current gpx.You could replace using current.gpx instead of temp.gpx.Also if I want to say add 10 new favorites to current.gpx.I take the 10 new ones and name the file temp.gpx and paste copy next to current.gpx and reboot. They are added to current.gpx.I then go back and delete the temp.gpx.If you don't delete the temp.gpx or any others you may have loaded from Google,Bing and Mapquest they create a problem. You can delete favorites from the gps using delete favorites tab.If the temp.gpx or others are still in the GPX folder once you re-boot they will re-load again. This is for the 265WT.

Yes, it needs to be renamed to Temp.gpx.

I have had a 650, 750, 755 and now a 1490 and I have done it the way I said and works great. I am talking about replacing the whole GPX file and not just adding to it.

Keeping them on the SD card works well for this. All you need to do is to place the card with the favorites.gpx file on it into the unit you want to use. I do this and it works well - only I choose not to load them to the device.
