No Speaking Alerts on Nuvi 1490T

I have a Nuvi 1490T. I just get a tone when approaching a Red Light. I called Garmin and she said all new Nuvi's come that way now. Is this true, I'm so disappointed because I like the speaking voice to let me know when I get close to red light cameras, rest areas and speed traps.

No problem getting voice alerts see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 all you need is sox.exe and wav file.Be sure to put sox.exe on your computer where poiloader is located.

Hey Charles, that is good to know since I too was wondering about that. I appreciate the info.

Sox.exe

I use it on my 265.The trick is to get the sox.exe in the correct location on your computer. For XP click My Computer,Local Disk (c)and click on Garmin Folder. You will see many files there including PoiLoader.Just paste a copy of sox.exe on any blank space.Only have to do that one time.

I have a Mac computer. I just downloaded sox.exe and when I opened it up I have ..... extra files ... poi loader) and sox.exe. I did put the Garmin POI Loader in a folder in my documents. Now what do I do. I don't understand the portion of unzipping or what to do with sox.exe.
Another question I downloaded an alert like this one redlight_nuvi_amer_eng_jill.wav instead of the MP3. Is this correct?

I do have a Nuvi 680 and have never had this problem before. It was so easy.

Small difference then what you did with the Nuvi 680.You use wav instead of mp3 .You state you have Mac.Mac users have reported that they didn't need to install the sox.exe to get the wav file to work. But if you do you will need to unzip and extract the file before you install in the Garmin Folder on your computer. Most computers come with program to unzip files. If not you can download from internet. Most are free.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the information..... I didn't download the sox.exe because I heard it's a program for cp's and not Mac's. Right now the poi loader says convert the wav files to 16-bit mono wav files. I have no idea how to do that. Maybe an Apple appt.

Lots of free programs to convert mp3 to wav on internet.I use GoldWave. Also plenty of wav files listed under sounds on top right of this page. You can also make your own at http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php .You may have to install the sox.exe on your computer if they don't work.Don't have a Mac but only stated what some Mac owners reported that they didn't need the sox.exe.

I have a 1490T and I get the voice alerts for red light cameras. I downloaded the SOX file as previously discussed and bingo....there are also many downloads from here where you have a choice to download MP3 or WAV sounds if you are doing so.

If you followed the instructions and still not getting the voice alerts the biggest problems with the alerts and icons not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.This is for XP.

Would guess Gramin not aware of the wav and sox.exe process. If they knew we might end of getting a change that will zap it away.

Alerts work on my 1490T

Alerts work the same on my 1490T as they do on my 265WT. I use sox and wav files.

It talks

I had the same problems as the OP. Charles guided me through this process a few weeks back. My 1490 uses voice alerts now.

Thanks ever so much. I finally got it working. It's all about the wav file. I downloaded another wav file because one file wasn't working correctly on rest areas, I have no idea why. I have a Mac and didn't have to download sox.exe. I did download the newest POI Loader for Mac and that helped. Thanks
