Question about primary and supplementary map files

I recently broke down and purchased a map update for my StreetPilot 2730, which I have owned since 2006. Initially, I had trouble loading the updated maps due to space constraints, although eventually I overcame this after figuring out how to delete the old maps.

I noticed, however, that the updated maps are split among the gmapprom.img (900mb) and gmapsupp.img (300 mb)files instead of being in one file. What is the best way to combine the files so that the entire map update is under gmapprom.img?

Use gmaptool

Use a utility called gmaptool to combine both the maps into one single map. You can follow one of the threads that discussed this here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25663

Why, just interested

What would be the expected benefit of combining the files?

not sure on that one

not sure on that one

Reason to combine file?

My understanding is that if I wanted to load additional map layers onto my GPSr, those map files would load to the gmapsupp.img file. Thus, I wouldn't want to overwrite the existing gmapsupp.img file if it contained primary map data; I would first want to combine the primary map data into one file (gmapprom.img).

Before updating the maps recently, I had a map layer loaded on my GPSr that contained the county boundaries. I re-downloaded this map into MapSource, as well as various topo maps, but I'm hesitant on transferring these maps onto the GPSr if they would overwrite the actual primary maps used for road navigation.
