Android net-books soon?

All,

My local sales nerd says that there will be a Samsung net book in Flagstaff on the 11th. No phone, but Android operating system with GPS and accelerometer. If so the LG Ally goes back to Sam's Club and I get one for just $149 and a new contract.

I still like the Acer net book with the DeLorme dongle GPS. It works and I can with mind bending effort up and download what they call "draw" files.

Reading Postman's "Amusing Ourselves to Death," and the post-election American diversion from navigating the road a head, have me in a funk.

Highway 61 is mentioned in H. S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," in the editor's note preceding chapter 9. I am thinking that the "journey into the heart of the American Dream" takes Highway 61 from the mid-west to New Orleans.

POI should stand for Points Of Importance!

VZ at a Cost

Mitch,

Just remember that you have to pay a subscription fee for VZ Navigator. With an Android operating system, you can use the Google Navigator for free.

I know, I did not buy the package, I will not buy the package,

Dear Holydoc,
VZ navigator seems an inferior product. Reading up and checking Bing, I cannot figure a single niche that would be better served by VZ Navigator than Google Maps.
Advertising (successfully) pushing inferior products leads to a less efficient economy. Advertising un-successfully pushing inferior products depreciates the media's credibility, and leads to a less efficient economy.
Google's motto, "Don't be evil!" is poorly stated IMHO. Better: "Do good!" Things that are between blatantly bad and decidedly good are possibly acceptable, under some circumstances, but not where I want to live.
I want to provide a useful service, make some money, buy a motor-sailer, get some charts, where POIs are less relevant, and sail into warm waters for the winter.
Best Regards, Cactusmitch

Android Wish-List

I wish that you could easily upload POI's to the Android / Google maps to work the same as a regular GPS.

Microsoft

That would be just great to have Microsoft into something else. They have done such a great job with Windows, MSN, and Ford's SYNC. rolleyes

on sailing those warm waters

Just make sure that motorsailor is equipped with a good, dedicated mapping gps supplied with charts and marine poi's. Paper charts will provide a good overview and backup for the gps but will likely have data a decade or two older.

GPS on smart phones

Hi All,

My local Verizon store promises that a Samsung net-book with Android will be in the store in about one week. No phone it it though.

I can get Google maps to act like a GPS. It was so easy I forgot how. I think I even had a directions by voice option. My Android Ally will be going back to Sam's Club where the sucker price was $29. It was near $100 by the time I got it out the door. I have been able to upload tracks and pictures from it. A tracking app comes with it. I have been able to get GPS info transfered via the micro SD card.

VZ-navigator's main advantage, (according to the sales nerd at my local store,) is its more frequent updates. Bing is Microsoft. My searches of local POIs on Bing were not very up to date. Google's strategy to exploit local knowledge seems better in the long run. Microsoft's corporate input strategy or perhaps just habit, seems bland. Why travel to go to a Wall Mart? They are all the same. I travel for local flavor, something tasty and different.

My grand daughter who works ata Wall Mart service desk says that GPS are often returned.

The future is in small multi purpose devices. Things like the smart phones, maybe that can be plugged in to a dock on the dashboard of any car you get into.

I am think that the comment about Microsoft doing well with operating systems was tung in cheek? Shouldn't Windows 97 be better than Windows 7 ?

Wish granted

Hi, Sharper4,

I am convinced that what you want can be done pretty easily. I have the same wish, and will be working on it fairly soon.
