Lost my nüvi 760 - need FM transmitter

I lost my trusty nüvi 760 and can't find it anywhere. Looks like I may have to purchase a new GPS. I don't care if it's a bit on the spendy side and I'm a Garmin fanboi but.... I need the dang mp3 player and FM transmitter and it looks like none of the new units have those features any more. I don't really use the mp3 player for music (much anyway) but I do listen to audio books on mp3 and audible format A LOT. I have to travel for work and I really need this feature.

I'm pretty much totally bummed to have lost my bullet-proof 760. I'm not sure what to do now since it seems I can't replace it with anything that has the same features.

I also had lifetime maps for the 760. Sigh.....

Question: Maybe I can look for a 750 - I think it was the same as the 760 but without the traffic feature (useless in my area) or the bluetooth feature (I don't care).

Maybe thrak's is among them?

dobs108 confused

765T

The 765T's are now discontinued and you might get a deal on one. The 4.00 firmware fixes a lot of the past problems though it broke Garmin Language Guide in the process :/

Craigslist

Well.......... I see a 750 from some place called bimore.com - there's apparently a store about 80 miles away. Unfortunately, that's the only nüvi listed for my entire area on craigslist.

I see that Amazon has an apparently new 855 for only $120. It offers the mp3/audible player I need and the FM transmitter as well. I don't need bluetooth. I think I'll check the past postings here on POI Factory for comments about the 855 and see what folks thought of it.

Nuvi 855 media player

Thrak, I have both a nuvi 755T and 855. They are both good navigation devices, but since you have indicated that playing audio books is one of your main requirements, there is something you need to be aware of. The 755T media player pauses the play for navigation prompts, then automatically resumes the play where it left off after the prompt is complete. I assume your 760 worked this same way. The 855 does not. It continues to play at reduced volume during navigation prompts, mixing the playing media with the prompt.

Also, I have had a few issues with the 855 with spontaneous reboots and garbled messages. These problems seem to be related to some combination of simultaneous media play / poi alert / navigation prompt. I have tried to use .WAV files instead of .MP3 for the POI alerts to solve this, but it hasn't helped. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it is very annoying.

In general, the media player support on the 7xx nuvi seems to be superior to the 8xx.

Sigh.......... Thanks for that info. It's pretty much a deal breaker. You are correct that the 760 pauses playback when giving navigation prompts. (It doesn't pause when giving custom POI alerts though...)

I'm also not real pleased by reading that the 855 never really shuts off - it just goes to sleep and will drain the battery. What a weird "feature" to include.

I really loved my 760. There's one on eBay from a seller with great feedback that is supposed to be new but it will likely go for a bundle. It's up to $200 now with quite a while to go yet and those auctions can get crazy pretty darn fast toward the end.

Hmmmmmmmmm.......... Interesting. I can't find any difference between the 760 and the 780 in the specs but it was originally more expensive. Apparently the only difference was the MSN service which is now discontinued anyway and which I don't care about at all.

Now I have to check around and see what kinds of problems the 780 had and if they were ever corrected before Gamin discontinued the model. There's a new 780 on Amazon. Of course it's freaking $300..........

BTW, I actually did check out MegaGPS and it showed the unit but, when I clicked on "view details" it said it was sold out. It still lets me put it into the cart and acts like I can purchase it though. Not very comforting.....

eBay

I bought one from eBay. It's listed as new - the person got it as a gift and already had a GPS so this one has just been sitting around. Retail box and packaging and the seller has an excellent feedback percentage with over 260 ratings. It's shipping today via USPS Priority Mail so I "should" have it in hand before I head out for a work trip next Wednesday/Thursday. Wahoo!

Of course I'll have to see if it's affected by the battery recall. If it is I'll have to decide whether to send it to Garmin or just replace the battery myself. I've done it before and it wasn't hard at all.

It's amazing to me how much I've come to depend on the nüvi. When it disappeared it was kind of a disaster for me - apart from the monetary concern. If the new models had the mp3 player and FM transmitter I would have just picked up the top-of-the-line Garmin. That's basically what I did when I bought the 760. I don't usually scrimp when I buy a tool and this is definitely something I view as a tool since I use it for work all the time.

When I travel, I take my old 350 as a spare in case something happens to my 760. I shudder to think of where I might end up if I actually had to go back to driving withoug a GPS!

For work trips I just take my 760. When I actually travel with my wife I also take my GPSMAP 78S since we'll also be geocaching. The 78S does routing as well - no spoken prompts but it has the most current map set and it routes perfectly.

Before I got the nüvi I used my old GPSMAP 76CSx for routing on several trips across country and it never failed me. I'm just spoiled by the nüvi 760. When I have to travel for work I always listen to audio books. It makes a 4 or 5 hour drive much nicer. I don't mind getting paid to listen to audio books. smile

I had to use my wife's nüvi 200 last week when I went to one of my offices. No book. No street names. BAH!!!

I wish the 1490 had the audio player and transmitter. I like the nice big screen and I would have bought that one in a heartbeat.

The 750 is just a basic

The 750 is just a basic unit
You will need a adapter for msn or the other traffic service, no blue tooth
If you could find a 780 is okay.
