Purchasing a new Garmin...

Well, after getting my previous Nuvi stolen at a hotel last year (long story), and not having it surface after reporting it to Garmin (Garmin lock works evidently), I'm buying a new unit.
At any rate, there were features I didn't use on my previous unit and my only real requirement is wide screen and spoken street names. I found a great deal on a 255w, any reason I shouldn't go with that unit or other advice? Thanks
New Garmin
My sister has a 265wt and it is an excellent unit and as the active forum says it is at Staples for $129.00 which is a good price. The T is for traffic which comes in handy once in a while.Hope this helps.
Look at the Nuvi 1450
The 1450 is reasonably priced ($175 at Amazon a couple of months ago), has a wide screen, spoken street names (and spoken destinations), Lane Assist, and Junction View. All-in-all, a nice product for a good price.

Agree with Lane Assist
I agree that Lane Assist is something I have become reliant on and would think hard about not having, Junction View to a lesser degree but still a nice feature. Displayed Speed Limits are up there on the list with Lane Assist too, imo.
It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.
Get it
If the 255W does everything YOU need, no reason not to buy one. Yes there are better choices out there for me, but who cares what I need?
Unit has a good track record on the ratings.

I´ve had 255W for a couple
I´ve had 255W for a couple of years and it has worked perfectly the whole time, never had any problems. It´s a no frills unit but get´s you from A to B everytime.

The nuvi 755T has worked out great for me...maybe you might look into it.

Garmin nuvi 760
I like my Garmin nuvi 760. It has been rock-solid. You can save 10 routes. Wide-screen, spoken street names. No lane-assist. I don't know if it is still available new, but Amazon.com has it refurbished for $230-.

Ditto
If the unit fits your needs, go for it. As for any negatives with the device, none that I've heard of.
200 series has no MP3 player.
It may not be important to you, but it is more of a hassle if you want to install custom POI's with audio alerts. Definitely stay away from 760 series, they have a well known issue with touchscreens.
Audio alerts - touchscreens

There is little added difficulty in using .wav files for proximity alerts instead of .mp3 files. This should not be a consideration in which nuvi to choose.
The units with the touchscreen problems were the 7X5 models such as the 765, not the 7X0 such as the 760.

200W Audio Alerts Not A Hassle

I have a 200W, and the only thing I have to do differently compared to other units is ensure that I have sox.exe in the directory where POI Loader is installed (in my case, C:\Garmin).
The 2x0 units and the 2x5 units, while physically similar, have fundamental software differences. 2x0 units have cross street information in the green banner bar when not on a route, but do not have the new interface, speed limit information, or traffic capability. Except for the 260, none of the 2x0s have TTS voices.
2x5 units lose the cross street information, but gain the new interface, speed limit info, traffic capability, and TTS voices (except I believe the 2x5, which has no TTS). 2x5 units have a faster screen refresh rate than the 2x0, and they acquire a signal lock much faster.
I'm oversimplifying things, but I know that when I upgrade my 200W, it will be to a unit that has not only the cross street information of the 200W, but all the other stuff in the 2x5 units. I believe the 1350 or 1450 has all that...but I can't remember for sure.

New Garmin
If I were buying a new one today, I'd get the 3790.
Small... feature packed... and has had good reviews.
255W Is A Good Choice
As someone else said in this thread, you have to compare features to your needs and go from there.
I have both a 255W and 265WT. They are essentially the same GPS except that the latter has traffic and Bluetooth for your cell phone. We happened to have an extra power cord with the traffic receiver in it (comes with the 265WT) and it works fine with the 255W. That made it essentially into a 255WT.
Lane assist would have been nice a time or two but I couldn't justify the extra cost.
It all depends on your wants and needs. For me, the 255W is a darn good GPS. And the 265WT is a bit better if you need traffic and Bluetooth and are willing to spend the extra few bucks.
Both are excellent units in my opinion.

I can't find my trusty 760 anywhere. I have a really bad feeling that I set it down on top of the car trunk last Wednesday when I got home from a work trip. The garbage cans were still out at the road and I may have set the 760 down on the trunk lid, brought in the garbage cans, brought in the mail, and totally spaced the nüvi. A little later I zoomed out the door to go over to a friend's house to wish him a happy birthday (he wasn't home). Wednesday was the last time I recall using the unit. If I did leave it on the trunk lid I don't know how far I could have gotten before it fell off. "Almost" everybody on my street would return it if found. However, there are some folks on the corner who don't seem very reputable and, if they found it, I don't know that I would have a chance of ever seeing it again.
It does have the Garmin lock enabled and a stuffbak splash screen but, if it hasn't surface by this time, I don't suppose I'll see it again. I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooo unhappy. I love that thing and it has all of my work info in it. My office locations, hotels I use, Safeway stores, Trader Joes stores, Wells Fargo banks, red light cameras, rest areas, etc. I'm totally directionally challenged and I NEED the dang thing for work!
I also use the FM transmitter in it to listen to audio books when on work trips. I don't know if the new units even HAVE the FM transmitters in them any more. BAH!!!
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. I actually came to this thread because I may be replacing my GPS.

No touch screen issue for me

I used my nüvi 760 since it came out as the newest and hottest unit around. I never once had a problem with the touch screen. Are you sure you aren't thinking of the 765 units?
