picture viewer on 1490 nuvi, uses of micro sd card

I put some jpg pictures on a micro sd card. One set of pictures is OK: I had "compressed" them a bit so they would load easily onto another device, my cell phone.

But the pictures that were "normal," that is still about 4MB in size, show up as a group, but when I try to look at any ONE of them, the screen stays blank.

This seems to make the picture viewer of limited interest to me.

Besides pictures, which I can't see, what else of use can I put on the sd card? I did put a freeware map of the Philippines on it, and it shows up on the 1490 OK, but I still have 3.9 GB of space left!

Irfanview

It is pretty much a waste to store 4 meg pictures on the nuvi with its limited screen resolution (and in your case it doesn't seem to be working well at all). What I did was take the pictures that I wanted to store on the nuvi and save them in a reduced resolution mode rather than in the high resolution right from my digital camera. That should allow you to save even more pictures.

One very handy free tool for working with pictures is Irfanview, available here: http://www.irfanview.net/
Not only can you use it to resize pictures, but it has a batch mode that will process pictures in bulk, even resize them, convert to different type imgase (jpeg for space savings) and rename the results for you.

I like to resize my pictures to 2x the nuvi resolution. They look good on the small screen and still give you some range to zoom in on without loss of resolution.

Irfanview includes other tools to let you crop the picture for better composition or otherwise edit it. It is not as powerful as the expensive Photoshop or even the free Gimp editing tools, but is a fantastic free viewer and limited editor that I install on all systems that I set up. I'm not affiliated with it in any way, just a user.

I agree with your comments

I agree with your comments about IrfanView. Been using it for years for reducing the size of images I want to send on the web & for many other purposes.

Great freebie.

Question: What is the Maximum JPEG Size My Device Can Display.

Answer:
The size limitation varies based on the contents of the image and how much memory is used on the device. Images 1600x1200 and lower should always display correctly on the device if you use images with a higher resolution they may not display.

Your nuvi will allow you to load pictures through a USB cable connection. Connect the nuvi to a direct USB 2.0 port (no hubs) on your computer.

Click on the Windows Start Icon.
Click on My Computer.
Double-click on the Garmin drive.
Double-click on the JPEG folder.
Copy and paste or drag and drop the desired JPEG files into this folder.
Once transfer is complete, eject the device from the computer.
The JPEG files will now be viewable on the device when you touch Tools, Picture Viewer.

any other uses?

I wonder what's can I use the expansion microSD card for? apart from saving the map and some pictures to it smile

.

POI's are another thing. Music if you have an mp3 player on the unit like some do. I can also load it with documents that I can load on another computer, if I don't have, or don't want to take my lappie with me.

It's only limited by your imagination and requirements, really.
