getting started

I just bought a 1490T. I installed the software from my.gamin.com. My computer will not recognize the device. It chimes on, then chimes right back off. I am at :MY DASHBOARD;SCAN FOR DEVICE. It says no device found. Can someone get me going? I am using XP.

Try a different USB port

One possibility is the USB port on the computer. Try another one, preferably one on the back of the PC and especially not one connected through a keyboard, monitor, hub or even some front USB ports.

If that doesn't help and you have another USB cable with the proper connectors, try the other cable.

I think that with XP, there's no need to manually install any driver software. To connect through mygarmin, you will need to have installed Garmin Communicator PlugIn so your browser will work with Garmin's site. Have you done this?

If you're having problems just with your browser working with the GPS, try using it with WebUpdater

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

or POI Loader

http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/

(You're going to want WebUpdater and POI Loader at some point, anyway.)

USB driver

Microsoft advertised that USB drivers would be unneccessary for Windows XP, but that is not the case for every device. There is a Garmin USB driver on my PC that I think was installed by WebUpdater, since I did not install it manually.

There was another thread on this subject and I will try to find it.

My Windows XP installation is fully updated; this is important. You have to have Service Pack 3. I disagree with many forum participants who would roll back updates.

In Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs there is:

Windows Driver Package - Garmin (grmnusb) GARMIN Devices (06/03/2009) 2.3.0.0
publisher : Garmin

It seems as if the USB driver above was downloaded from Garmin. Perhaps it came with Poi Loader. It may have come from WebUpdater. I would start there.

Try to install usb driver for garmin devices from here

http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=591

(scroll all the way down and accept license to download). It should resolve problem if this is driver problem (it seems like this driver is missing looking at message).
If this will not help try to connect to different usb port or connect to this port any other device (memory stick, card reader, usb hard drive) to check if it will work. If not there is something wrong with usb port or motherboard.

Check as well device manager and delete any entry that show as not working correctly (usually with question mark of something similar) than replug gps.

And try if your gps is being recognized when connected to any other computer. If other comp will show this same problem it is possible that something wrong happened to unit itself.

Cable

And don't forget to try a different USB cable if all else fails. Cables do go bad.

WinXP SP3 should not need any additional drivers installed.

Bad USB cable

The other thread mentioned above has good info on a driver, but the problem identified in the end was a bad USB cable!

Sometimes my garmin will boot all the way through usb cable and then is not recognized in XP. When i back up my unit i also need to change to a short Usb cable, my 6 footer ends up rebooting the unit if I do not. Make sure you are in charging mode when plugged in. You should see the puter with monitor on the bottom, if you need to hit the "Agree" icon, it didn't recognize. One more thing you could check which might be a bit tricky for some. Hit start, then Run and type in services.msc. In there you will find something called "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" Make sure that is set to Automatic. Hope this helps

More than one GPS?

If you have more than one GPS, maybe My Dashboard or WebUpdater do not have the info (serial number) of the new 1490T if it was not registered.

Got R Done

Thanks for all your help. I am saving this thread.. I called Garmin. IIRC the USB driver that Garmin installed became corrupted. The help desk put my pc in the remote mode. He did some uninstalling and installing and solved the problem. I am impressed with the knowledge and the professionalism "SAM" exhibited.
Now to get some custom POI loaded. You guys are the best.

Hooray!

glad to hear it is resolved for you.

good info to know for future reference. How do you like your new unit?

Could you duplicate in words what he did?

If you can, it might be a good FAQ. This will likely come up again.

I'll second that

I did not understand most of the things he did. He had to do a Microsoft update. I have no problem with him getting into my computer.
Thanks again every one.

There have been reports of Garmin problems when MS's .NET Framework is either corrupted or not current. I wonder if that could have been the problem.

Two questions.

The 1490T is my first Garmin. What a GPS!! For our shakedown cruise, we went to Branson, MO
1. The track file does not hold enough points for the entire trip. Is there a way to save the file each day? And then save them to Map-source after the trip.
2. I loaded the McDonald's custom POI file before the trip. Is it possible for those POI icons to be displayed in the "Map View" mode, regardless of the zoom level?

You will have to bring a laptop with you and periodically download and save the track file into MapSource or at least save incremental copies of your Current.gpx file and use other software later.

If you set an alert on the your POI files, they will show on the map at more zoom levels, but then it will alert ever time you pass one. That gets pretty tiresome after a while.
