Check the USB port on the device - see if there's anything that looks out of place...try an old dry toothbrush and brush it out... then try other cables... if neither of those work, there may be a device issue.

Might be recalled...

Plug it into a computer, connect to garmin with it, if that's the one with the recall on the battery it will tell you to send it in.

I suspect it is, that sounds like a dead battery problem. A known problem on some models in that line.

No need to connect it, just input the serial # on the website.

If you are using the USB cable then what your 255W is doing is what it is suppose to do. When the computer icon appears on the screen then you'll find the Nuvi displayed in My Computer as a Removable drive. The drive is the contents of your Nuvi's internal storage.

When plugged into your vehicle, are you using the Garmin car adapter cable or something else. If your using some other kind of cable it could be that it isn't pinned in the proper way and the Nuvi isn't seeing it as a car adapter but a USB cable.

The OP said it didn't work.

That is all possible. But the OP said the thing locked up and didn't work.

I wonder, it might be working after all.

usb mode

the computer logo means it is in USB mode, which means that the gps thinks that it is connected to a computer. this can happen when you plug a regular mini usb charger into garmin because the pins on garmin charger are different than a regular usb charger.

are you using the garmin power cable that came with the GPS?

good point

Good point. My 200W does that with a non-Garmin car adapter I have.

You don't know the Garmin pin config by any chance do you? I've been meaning to research it for a while but misplaced the car adapter, so..!

There's only 5 pins so I'd think it can't be THAT different from standard. But it is it seems, at least on my 200W.

Thanks to all that commented on my problem. I am sorry that I am so late responding.
I reset to factory default and replaced the 12 volt power supply. I made a run on the Blue Ridge (200 miles)and it worked fine. The only bad thing was, she wanted to steer me to I-81. The leaves on top were almost gone but at the lower elevations they were beautiful.
