Family photos

I keep some family photos (Jpg) on my Nuvi.

Some of these unedited photos are 3-5 MB in size.
I don't want to use up unnecessary space on my Nuvi with my photo collection. I don't need a 12 megapixel picture for viewing on my Garmin.I am willing to modify the filesize & resolution with Photoshop.
Rather than trial & error, perhaps someone knows the answer.

My question is:
What is a reasonable filesize/resolution to use on a Nuvi?

Also, my pictures only use up a portion of the Nuvi screen. Is there a way to display a photo so the entire screen is used? Perhaps height & width changes?

Which nuvi?

From Garmin

Question : What resolution should my pictures be for viewing them on my nuvi?

Answer:

Each screen size has its own specifications for the best resolution. The ideal resolution for pictures if you intend to view them on your GPS device would be the native resolution of the screen. For 3.5" screens, 320x240 is the best resolution. For 4.3" screens, 480x272 is the best resolution. For the 5.2" screen, 800x480 is the best resolution.

Photo Size

Open your pics with a program such as Microsoft Office Picture editor. Select re-size from the menu and it allows you to set the size via pixel width and height OR it has pre-set sizes for small email, large email, etc. Most of my photos will fill the screen using the large email size setting and it drastically reduces the byte size of the file as well.

Betteer yet....

open the stock photos that came with the Nuvi, and see what the dimensions are, either in inches or pixels. you can do so with Photoshop, then resize your photos accordingly.

Modify At Save

Since you have Photoshop, you can modify the photo size (based on the info Canuk provided) but also save the result at a lower resolution. Move the slider from "highest" to somewhere in the middle and you'll reduce the file size considerably. Save the result to your Nuvi and see if the quality is good enough. If not you can always resave at higher quality.

Which model?

It's a Nuvi 765T. with a 4.3" screen
Someone has already answered the resolution question.

I tried a different method.
I measured the horizontal & vertical screen size and entered that into Photoshop with a dpi of 72.
It works great and my filesize is less than 10% of the original JPG.

It even allows me to zoom in with little degradation.

That tells me I can probably save even more space.
