"City Navigator Europe" vs "City Navigator Europe – Italy + Greece"

Hey all,

Going to Italy in a bit with my 265WT and pondering which of these guys is better - I'm planning on getting into some of the smaller towns - (Sienna, Montepulciano etc) and I do want the detailed coverage, but cant tell from the Garmin site if everything on Italy only is included in the full Europe database... Price difference is only 30 bucks (99 vs 69)..

anyone know? thanks for any input in advance!

.

On my 2011.10 maps, Montepulciano is there in all it's glory. The complete Euro maps cover everything in full detail on my 775T.

EU maps

I think that splitting Europe into smaller parts (map wise) was done to make those maps cheaper than map of whole Europe. But if you bought all of them separately it cost after all much more then buying map of whole Europe.

As I own CN Europe I can't say for sure but my impression is that when buying only one country (or region) you still getting map of Europe but only part of it will be unlocked for your device. When I'm checking Map Info on my garmin under CN Europe it says "all". So I guess it is this same map, like those for smaller parts of EU but with activation of all parts.

This same is with CN North America. My unit says "all" under Map Info. So it shows US and Canada and some Mexico. And this area can be (at least in past) split in several smaller parts (like US had a few different maps sold with coverage of different parts of country and later you were able to activate more regions).

I don't think they make separate maps but just split them in pieces with separate activations. So those maps should be same either bought as piece of EU or whole EU. After all once you have MapSource installed and want new part of ma activated then it is enough to buy activation code from garmin, you don't have to buy new DVD with software.

So I'm just seeing v9 on SD card (but the SKU is 010-10680-50 ) so is that the latest version? Thanks for your input!

getting the whole vs the parts!

You're welcome.

Latest EU map reports itself as "City Navigator Europe NT 2011.2".
It's from gps unit. I'm not sure what number it will be (9 or anything else).

Just remember that maps on sd cards (bought from garmin in this format) ARE NOT upgradeable!!! To get newer map you have to buy new card. So be sure to check if you getting latest version (calling garmin or something) if you decide to buy one on card.

To load EU map into unit (from DVD or download) you will need a lot of space. Set of maps for Europe was about 1GB bigger than map for whole US. So eventually you may need to load it on sd card if your gps has slot for a card or load only part of Europe depending on free space in unit.

I have the maps built in to my unit, so no SD card or version. They came preloaded on the 775. Sorry.

As was stated, 2011.20 is the latest though.

Not sure if this applies for

Not sure if this applies for Italy or not, but I can tell you when I used my 370 in Hungary a couple of yers back I was happy I purchased the Hungary maps in addition to the Europe that came with the unit. THe main Europe maps gave me generic for Hungary; the Hungary package gave me detail maps, POI info the "generic" did not contain.

Good luck!

EU maps

A few years ago "European Maps" covered only so called Western Europe. They didn't include former Eastern Bloc countries (like Hungary). They were covered by separate "Eastern Europe Maps". Right now "City Navigator Europe NT" covers almost whole continent from Portugal up to Russian border. Coverage is poor only for some south European countries. Quality of coverage is shown here:
