760 American English Jill TTS

My 760 has for ages mispronounced "Left". American English Jill TTS says "Then turn laft" replacing the 'e' sounds with an 'a'

I have deleted the actual text file and redownloaded it from the garmin webupdater many times. Does anyone else hear it as 'laft'

I tried importing a TTS file from my 265 which is perfect, but it is not a compatible format.

Thank you thank you

Finally, another person has my Left Jill issues. I've talked about it a few times at POI Factory and no one has reported the issue (and many may think me daft...or deaf).

I have a 750 and an 855 and both have the issue you report. Actually, my problem is much worse than left becoming laft--I can't even try to pronounce or spell what Jill says.

I also find that Jill has two versions of "left" and only one fails. The word in the middle of a sentence is perfectly correct, as in "In point two miles, turn left onto..." But when left is the last word of the sentence, I get only gibberish, as when she needs to say "Arriving at home, on left." In this case, "left" sounds sorta like rappt. Very odd. I'm still amazed that I have the issue on two nuvis and you now have a left issue but that no one else seems to hear this.

I have swapped to Karen mostly to avoid the "left" issue even though Karen doesn't know things that Jill does--like BL is pronounced Business Loop, not pronounced "bulll."

Thanks again for making me feel less paranoid.

Yes, I have had issues with Jill as well. Sometimes she says North and it should be South and that can really get you going the wrong way.

Jill is Okay

Jill has always pronounced "left" properly for me at all times. There have been several updates and she keeps pronouncing it correctly.

Sounds like an attempt at replicating a southern accent to me.

Jack

I have tried all the voices. The English ones anyways. "Jack" is the clearest voice of them all. Tho, sometimes I just use my own voice, which to me is the clearest sounding, because I created it, my way! Even my wife likes it the best, even though it doesnt speak street names. For overall clear, English diction, Jack it probably the most easy to understand.

To answer your question about Jill. Yes, she sounds like she is saying "laft" to me too. I looked at it in my eidtor, and it is spelled "left". Guess it is the accent. This is why I use "Jack".

It's the abbreviation

It's the way Garmin is abbreviating Business Route in their maps. BR is the correct abbreviation while Br is indeed branch. It started during the 2010 updates.

Pronounciations

I use Jack. He does odd things as well. Holiday Inn Express is always pronounced as "expressway". The business route abbreviation is always "branch".

When I go to my office in Lakeport he calls it the "Lack-A-Port" office but he can say Lakeport properly when it's the name of a street there.

When I go to another office he says to turn on a road that he totally mangles the name of but, when I make that turn he says the name properly afterward.

It's really weird the way he says things properly in some places but horribly mangled in other places. The dang words are spelled the same..........

I can't find the jack voice on my 755T.

Jill seems to have an accent.....

I use Jill, on both my 760 on my 785T. She seems to have problems with various words. I haven't heard the "Left" issue.

I travel some roads that get really mispronounced. One is "Stearns", Jill says "Stens". Another one is "Devon" Jill says "Devan".

Jill has had several updates

Are you hearing the fully updated Jill? She sounds a lot better than she used to.

Back to the Left issue

Hi J_E_F_F,

If this works for some and not for others, it means you have different versions of firmware or voice.

Do you know which firmware version you are running on your GPS? v4.90?

Do you know also which version of Karen you are running on your GPS? For that, try to open it with TTSVoiceEditor. It will be displayed.

While you are there (in TTSVoiceEditor), you could search for the phrase "on left" and try to replace "left" with something that would be pronounced correctly. Maybe "lefft", "lefte", ... There is always a way to fool the GPS.

Turbo

Try this

Shirke wrote:

The file with Jack's voice resides in the /Garmin/Voices directory of your nuvi (and hopefully, your computer backup of the nuvi). It's called American_English_Jack.vpm and .sum.

If it's not there, connect your nuvi to your computer and run Webupdater

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

After checking for firmware updates, you'll be offered another page of voice updates, etc. Check and download/install Jack to restore it to your GPS.

I like Jack's voice

Jill has always told you she was "recalculating" as if you were stupid for not doing what she said and were putting her to to much work. I'm not the only one who thinks that. My wife and several friends have also commented about it.

Use Voice Editor

geochapman wrote:

Easy fix. Use Turbo's TTS Voice Editor to make Jill (or any other TTS voice) say exactly what you want. Instead of "recalculating" your voice can say "oops, lets try this again" or "have it your way" or anything else you choose.

Cheers wink

Gotcha. I think you may have fallen into a trap I've been in before. When you go to your nuvi's voice selection screen, you're not necessarily at the top--your location in the voice options depend on the voice you currently have in use.

Touch the up arrow button to see the voice choices above the one you have currently in use. Jack is the topmost TTS voice available and won't be seen until you use the up arrow to see the top 5 (which may be Africaans, American English, Jack TTS, Jill TTS and Arabic) and therefore is the most likely TTS voice to appear to be missing.

For example, when I use Karen as my selected voice, I once wondered where Jill went. Well, Jill's above Karen so an up arrow is needed to select Jill or Jack. If you use the default Jill voice, Jack won't be seen until you up arrow to him.
Good hunting.

Thanks Craig, I got it jack

Strange Pronunciation

I use Jill and get some quite unique translations.
For instance the screen shows “Boul St Charles” and Jill says
“Bowell street Charles”
Is it just a Canadian thing or does she say “street Louis”

Boul St Charles

Did you download TTS_Speech_Doctor and enable the

•Change "St" to "Street" instead of "Saint"

If you did that, this may explain why it does that.

Nope

Hi Turbo, no, I am only using the standard "Jill" voice.

--
Nuvi2797LMT (2) Nuvi260,Ford Sync3 Navigation. Captain Cook was a Yorkshire man too.

St-Charles

I looked at the Jill file. It seems all St are converted to Street. "St Louis" is converted to "Saint Louis", so this one is safe.

I would try TTS_Speech_Doctor_Pro and replace one of the expression with " Saint Charles " and " St Charles ". Note the spaces before and after.

Do not try to play with "St", "St." and so on. It seems there is an override and it will not work.

1- copy Jill on your computer. Keep also another copy elsewhere in case you want to go back.

2- Use the DrPro to make the changes. You may want to try my proposition above.

3- Save with exact same VPM name and copy back to GPS.

If anything goes wrong or does not work, copy the original file back and you will be as good as new.

Ya but
