Hi,
I used a USB adapter in the car to use it to charge the blackberry and have no problems with it.
However when I used it to charge the Nuvi 350, it works fine until the main menu is on then all of a sudden the screen changes into the mode where it shows a image of the GPS unit connected to a desktop the computer and the screen gets locked out.
When I unplug it, it's still stuck in this mode and I'd have to use the reset button on the back to get it working.
It'd be nice to be able to use the USB charger instead of the bulky adapter for everytime I use the GPS.
Is there a way around this?
Nuvi 750 - what works for me
I have nuvi 750 which has it's own special craddle and plug. I can use my phone charger this way.
Turn on nuvi.
Get to menu screen. Press and hold my finger on the battery power level button for about 10 seconds. This brings up a screen with lots of info on it.
Plug the phone car charger into the nuvi.
Press the exit button.
Slide the top switch to the left - it appears to power off.
Slide the top switch again to the left - it powers on and has to search for new satellites again.
I believe running in this mode not everything works. Off hand, I think the voice announcing is silent. But it runs on the phone charger, and it think it trickle charges the batter too.
Upside - you can using almost many phone power adapters.
Downside - you have to have enough power left to power up and push and hold the battery button.
Google your GPS and you may find something different.

USB Charger
The USB charger will not deliver the amperage (flow rate) for normal GPS operation that the cradle would. The GPS battery will discharge.

Garmin and USB mini B connector
Garmin is relucant to disclose the usage of the 5 pins of the USB mini B connector on the varous GPS offered.
I personnaly modified a USb cable to make my Nuivi 250 work as a GPS when connected to any USB power only source. (See other entry in the forum)
After reading your quote, I powered my Nuivi without external power source, until I run 'low bat.'
Then I connected my GPS to my computer with my own cable. The GPS is loading the batteries slowly, but loading.
My opinion is that Garmin should be forced by its clinet to disclose the USB mini B specifications, eventhough those specs are proprietary of Garmin.
Hope this helps, Jacques
