2011 map now makes me take difficult/impossible left turns

I've had my Nuvi 760 for more than 2 years now. Just upgraded to the 2011 map via purchase of the lifetime update code.

It bugs me now that on at least 3 known occasions, it is directing me to take left turns on a corner with either no light (makes for long wait) or a highway median (impossible left turn). It used to direct me on the corner next to it, where there's a light or there's a break in the median.

It's a good thing I am familiar with the area that I knew enough not to follow the Nuvi. But this makes me wonder about a lot of unfamiliar territories where I am blindly following its direction.

I'm in Vancouver BC Canada by the way, where its giving me these frustrating left turns. Anybody else encounter this?

Yes, it has happened

However, remember, the unit doesn't know the traffic conditions so it routes you accordingly.

What happens if you hit 'Reroute'? I'm curious if it gives you a better route to take.

Yes, but...

My old 2009 map took me to the right intersections. I was surprised that this newer 2011 map is directing me one block past the correct one.

And it's not really about traffic. In one instance, it's a median blocking thru traffic. The only possible turn is a right turn. Like I said, it's an impossible left turn for a vehicle. The map should know about those things.

Oh well...

.

New maps can't account for new road changes. It's a never ending battle for us, and the map makers.

No no no

You don't understand. Nothing has changed except my map upgrade. The roads around my house have not changed, i.e. no constructions, no additions, no deletions, no closures, nothing. The blocking median has ALWAYS been there.

What I'm saying is that the algorithm the 2011 map is using to direct me past the same route over the past 2 years to get out of the city seems to be different from the 2009 map in that it does not seem to recognize impossible left turns anymore, while the 2009 map did. The 2009 map was better in that sense.

And I'm asking if anyone who has upgraded to the 2011 map has found similar differences. That's all.

.

Have you upgraded to new firmware lately? That's the likely culprit. FW sets algorithms, not maps.

The algorithm didn't change when you updated the map

The algorithm didn't change when you updated the map unless you updated the units firmware at the same time you did the map update. I have heard nothing about any firmware updates for the 760 so that couldn't be it.

The algorithm is part of the units built in firmware and not part of the map software itself.

.

Do a hard reset on the unit and see if things go back to normal for you.

If the wrong left turns continue after you've done a hard reset, it's possible the turn data is incorrect in the new map.

Long ago, with the 2008 maps, our nuvi directed us to take a left turn OFF A BRIDGE in Hamilton!!!

The wrong turn was corrected in the 2009 maps.

Yes!I cant agree more。

Yes!I cant agree more。 if u dont have lane assist, u will feel pretty hard to make a left turn on the highway intersection.

Left was added to the map

The left turn through the media was either added to the map because someone submitted the addition or they tried to add the left someplace else and it accidentally got put there.

My Nuvi 350...

...seems to get weirder with newer maps and software updates. It's wanted me to take roads that don't even exist. 'Turn left into this swamp' is its underlying message. Once it had me going down some fire trail on a mountain, more fit for a Hummer, even though dirt roads was an 'avoidance' I'd checked off.

Bottom line: my dear ol' dad told me more than a half century ago 'No one is perfect, and nothing that people do is perfect.' Never found a single exception to either of those rules in all the intervening years. GPS' are imperfect. Get used to it.

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies. I will try the hard reset route when I get home.

As far as getting used to it, it's hard when you're "used to" the old 2009 map NOT directing you to make illegal or impossible left turns. That's what's frustrating.
