Pilot and Flying J Merge!
07/15/2010
A couple of weeks ago, Pilot and Flying J truck stops completed a merger of the two companies into a new single company called Pilot Flying J. Since many traveling Escapees use the Flying J RV Real Value card to save money on fuel purchases, we contacted Flying J’s loyalty card office to determine what effect the merger would have on that service. The answer we received was: “In the future, it is our intention to expand the existing loyalty programs to all Pilot Flying J locations, but for the time being, the RV Real Value program will continue to be honored at all Flying J locations but will not be accepted at Pilot locations.”
As part of the merger agreement, a number of Flying J stores were sold outright to Love’s and will be converted to Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores. Love’s does not offer a similar RV loyalty program, so those converted locations will no longer offer RVers a fuel discount.
The press release announcing the completion of the merger is excerpted below.
PILOT TRAVEL CENTERS AND FLYING J FINALIZE MERGER
--------------------------------
Pilot Travel Centers LLC and Flying J Inc. announced today the completion of the merger of the two companies, creating an expanded network of more than 550 interstate travel centers and travel plazas focused on superior customer service and enhanced offerings for professional drivers and traveling motorists.
The new company, to be called Pilot Flying J, now operates in 43 states and six Canadian provinces and employs more than 20,000 people. It is one of the top 10 privately held companies in the United States.
“We are now one great company, two great brands,” said Pilot Flying J president and CEO Jimmy Haslam. “Our new organization is a combination of two of the best-known brands in the travel center industry, both with strong family histories and shared values. “
Customers still will see the Pilot and Flying J brands on signage at the interstate facilities. Pilot has begun to accept the TCH card, and Flying J has begun to accept Comdata cards. This change gives the trucking community many more options of where to fuel that are not dependent on the card they carry. Other plans call for enhanced restaurant offerings with national brands in all locations. Brand additions to Flying J locations in the new network include Denny’s, Subway, and Pizza Hut. In addition, there will be upgrades to drivers’ lounges, new gasoline and diesel pumps, enhanced showers, and remodeled restrooms at many locations.
Pilot Flying J is selling 26 locations to Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores as required by the Federal Trade Commission as a condition for the merger. For a list of the affected locations and for additional information about the merger, visit http://www.pilotflyingj.com.

okay, now we have a new POI file for the combined truckstops

I just finished converting the new location files on the Pilot-FlyingJ website to a garmin.csv. I ran it through the Verifier. Tossed out a couple lame entries, found a couple without co-ords, but it's up to date as of 7-15-2010.

flying J

Thanks for the poi update

Combined files.

I guess since they are now merged and all on one file on the web site. One of the files for Poi Factory should be deleted.

I see that now, thanks for taking that on. I will take the time sometime this week to simplify the project in regards to other files still published.

Gas brands

Flying J is also changing gas brands at some stations. Our local station had Shell gas which gave me a 5% rebate using my Shell card. Now they're going unbranded, so I guess I don't buy gas there anymore.

I was traveling in TN last

I was traveling in TN last week & looking for PILOT truck stops (specifically) using the POI info I downloaded from here a few months ago.
I then learned that PILOT also has convenience stores in TN which sell gas, these are listed as PILOT Food Marts in the latest GPX file along with PILOT Travel Centers as if they are equivalent, which they are not.
I would prefer a PILOT POI listing that only has the travel centers and truck stops and which excludes the Food Marts, convenience stores being so common in most parts of the country anyway.

Thank you!

I want to thank those who asked about the Pilot Travel Centers file - I started it several years ago and don't have the time to build the files.

Many thanks to those who built the new files.

Flying J

Good to know...thanks!!!

I still need two files.

To delete one of the files right now would be pre-mature in my opinion. As I have a RV Real Value card that is not accepted at Pilot yet, I would prefer two seperate files.

I maintain the GPX and I'm not going to split out the food marts from the truck stops. They are plainly marked as to what they are, and for someone needing fuel, either will work in most instances.

Flying J locations are still listed in the file as Flying J even though the Flying J file has been replaced with the combined Pilot/Flying J one. The merger will probably result in the Flying J brand going away at some point. Some of the Flying J locations were transferred to Love's so the old FJ file isn't all that accurate any more.

Food Marts vs. Travel Centers

I stop at truck stops for services such as being able to park overnight, more than for fuel, and that is not possible at Pilot Food Marts.
I have downloaded the combined GPX file and have found it was easy to segregate the "Pilot Food Mart" listings & delete them, using Street Atlas 2009, then re-export the GPX file without the food mart listings.

Both stations.

Makes no difference both files are combined. They show the names of the station that shows on the gps.

no more buffet

Well the buffets are going away a Dennys is taking over.

loves

im searching but has the loves poi been updated since pilot sold them some fuel stops? i have the new book for loves with all new stops.

Buffet

They have already started converting the restaurant in Calgary to Dennys. It's the first one to change in Canada. They will not accept the Flying J loyalty card so no more fuel discount.

Flying J Restaurant?

I didn't know that Flying J had a restaurant in Calgary. The station in Red Deer is only a convenience store and I just assumed that the others in Alberta would be the same.

I've eaten at Flying Js down in the US and generally enjoyed the meals... for a truck stop.

Canada

I think Winnipeg has a restaurant as well.

RV Real Value Card

Effective 1 September the card will be accepted at Pilot with new/different features. Pilot also has some type of card that will be accepted at Flying J.

fuel discounts

Apparently they're giving fuel discounts if you use the RV lane. And you don't have to have food or other purchases to get the discount.

Flying J

I received a letter some time ago that Flying J would no longer give discounts on the rewards card.

So locally for diesel I have been going to the Fred Meyer (which still gives discounts @ 2%) and avoiding the Flying J.

If you ain't got pictures, I wasn't there.

RV Real Value Club card at all 550+ Pilot Flying J locations

I'm not sure about the "rewards" card but looks like they have now expanded their discounts to all locations and have a new RV program.

According to their website....
-------------------------------
-------------------------------
Effective September 1st - Use your RV Real Value Club card at all 550+ Pilot Flying J locations!

Both Pilot Travel Centers and Flying J are grateful to our longtime loyal RV customers and families. Effective September 1st, Pilot Flying J will have a merged loyalty program. The RV Real Value Club Card will be accepted at all 550+ Pilot Flying J locations. You now have an expanded network of locations for great fuel and other discounts!

New RV Program

Instant Fuel Discounts (at Flying J & Pilot locations at RV lanes and gas/diesel pumps for automobiles)

1/2 off RV dump fee

No inside purchases required

I'm working on this now.
I'm an OTR driver as well and created my file for just the reason you state.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26692

I'm working on adding the Flying J's.

Note, this file will be going the way of the Dodo sometime soon.
I'm working on getting the major truck stops, (Pilot/Flying J, Love's, TA/Petro), categorized into one super file...

Flying J, Pilot, etc

There are already 2 files on this web site:

Flying J/Pilot and

Flying J/Pilot,Loves/Petro/TA

I don't see the second one

I don't see the second one you elude to donaldb530.

Besides, the files I've seen simply use the coordinates found on the truck stop's websites.

My file, once completed, will point directly to the truck entrance(s).
Most, if not all, the coordinates found on the truck stop websites point to the incorrect location. IE; a residential area, patch of empty land etc...

I'm using Google Maps satellite imagery, by hand mind you, to rack down the actual locations and editing accordingly.

My file all lists the Hwy and Exit numbers for quick access as n9mxq requested/suggested...

S3 combined files...

So you are the reason for the cold weather coming to the Houston area, just kidding, but do please have a safe trip.

Flying J, Pilot, etc

Flying-J_Pilot_Fuel_Stops.gpx dated 11/29 has all that data and locations were extracted from Google Earth with most locations being at the fuel island entrance. If there are errors let me know (Individually, not a blank statement that says they are wrong) and I will correct them.

Cold?
