Wondering if any of you have isssue with yopur garmin unit becoming very slow in respon se when you zoom in on the map while driving? My unit will no longer show the position of the vehicle accurately like it freezes. When I zoom out a couple levels it returns to normal operation speed...Just would like to get some feed back on this. I do not have a SD card in it for extra memory and I have about 300MB of space left on the unit. Would the SD card help it speed up when I zoom in and no longer cause the freezing , pausing , hesitation issue. Thanks!!
It would help to know which garmin you are using.
The quick answer is that adding a card will not speed the unit up.
Without knowing anything else about your unit, I would suggest backing up your waypoints and doing a hard reset.
It's the Garmin Nuvi 255w
Your unit has an autozoom feature which changes the map scale as you drive. At low speeds it displays a limited area with more detail than seen at highway speeds. The type of display, track up or 3-D is also a factor.
The processor in the 255 is not very powerful, so it can easily be overloaded with trying to draw rapidly changing detail.
Annoying, but normal.
The OP stated that his unit will 'no longer' update the display at an acceptable speed, implying that something has changed;
It could be due to a map update (he didn't say whether he'd done one). It could be accessory files in memory. It could simply be that the free space has become corrupted.
I suggest that if custom POIs have been installed and such, those COULD be factors;
As originally suggested I recommend starting by extracting any saved waypoints from my favorites and then doing a hard reset to see if there is anything abnormal in memory causing the issue.
+1. A hard reset needs to be the first thing done to eliminate other possibilities.
If your nuvi has these settings, try the following: Go to: tools, settings, map, map detail; and change to less. (options are: Most, More, Normal and Less)
In my nuvi 855 this settings can make the map zoom faster or slower depending in the detail of the map, the more detail=slow zoom; less detail=fast zoom
