What do you need for Asia

What program do you need to use a 660 in China/Japan? I haven't seen maps for that area, or would the 660 just use the world map? This is ainly to be used on ship. I don't need it right at this moment, but something to be thinking about.

Garmin 660

Looks Like the 660 is not useable

The Map Source Compatability tool at http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/ontheRoad/ indicates the only extra map product Garmin offers that is compatible with the 600 is a BlueChart. The 350 appears to be capable of using Garmin's WorldMap

I don't think they would

I don't think they would allow Americans to scout every road in China, too much at stake. Besides, you don't want to drive there anyway.

No intent on scouting their

No intent on scouting their roads. Its for use aboard ship between countries to track where you are at sea.

At sea? Shouldn't that be

At sea? There's BlueChart Asia, but doesn't seem to work with NUVI.

Wait a second, what kind of ship across international water without having a GPS? Are you caption or smuggler hiding in cargo bay ^_^

Yes - when you are beyond the area covered by your detailed maps, it will switch to using the data in the Basemap. If you turn off the GPS and use the "Where to" | "Browse map" function (or equiv on Nuvi 660), you can have a look at the amount of detail available for places like China. There probably won't be much.

However - on the Garmin site at:- http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=461 there is an enhanced Basemap, that contains quite a bit more detail.

This map is intended for the iQue3600, and is an executable file. To use it with the Nuvi, do "Save" rather than "Run" and then open the .EXE file with Winzip. You should find a 32MB file called GMAPBMAP.IMG in there, which you can copy to the \Garmin directory on the Nuvi, overwriting the file that is currently there. Obviously - make a backup of the original file first ;-)

re: Basemap

Great tip Phil - worked great on my 350.

Thanks!

Basemap

When extracted to the Garmin folder - it creates a subfolder called Worldwide on the nuvi 660. Have not checked it out on the road but seems to work fine in the simulation mode.

Probably best to extract it to Drive C: first...

You just need clear the "[ ]Use folder names" option, before you extract it. I think you've possibly ended up with a GMAPBMAP.IMG in \Garmin and another one in \Garmin\Worldwide :-(
It's probably still using your original one.

Ensure you back-up your original GMAPBMAP.IMG

Actually renamed the image in the Garmin folder - so apparently it does not have to be in the garmin folder but is reading from Garmin\worldwide.

Basemap Bonanza

Phil's phree basemap phind is phantastic!

I took the quick way and simply renamed the original, leaving it on my nuvi660 (located in the root directory, btw). Subsequently I tried to calculate a route to Moskva, but saw a new message...not enough memory. I guess I need to offload unneeded stuff if I intend to drive from California to Russia.

Other than storage, is there a limit on route complexity? I know that there is an upper limit as to the number of mp3 files, regardless of available storage (I think the number is 1,000). Also, Favorites are limited (500). Just curious.

Thanks for the cool tip.
