Which direction?

How can you tell which direction a speed camera photographs? Do speed cameras (both at intersections and otherwise) usually photograph the side of the street they're on? It's hard to visually tell, I saw a speed camera today that looks like it's pointed toward the other side of the street but the flash looking additions seem to point toward the same side of the street.
Direction It's Pointed...
...but many intersections have multiple cameras, shooting in several directions.

Speed Camera Direction
The only speed cameras I have seen (or did NOT see ) were on the same side of the street and intersection as I was. I think they would HAVE to face the traffic moving away in order to photograph the rear license plate. I suppose cameras could be mounted on a centre median to get a clear picture of the inside lanes of multi-lane roadways.
Same Side.
Located on same side of the street.
