Difference

Basemaps are high level detail maps that show only major roads. The City Navigator maps that Garmin sells include detailed street maps. I don't know about your unit but some like the Nuvi have the detailed maps built in.

Oh ok, thanks. So if major

Oh ok, thanks. So if major roads get updated/built, is that included in the nav. software or the base on or both? Does the City Nav update the base maps as well?

Since your c530 has preloaded City Nav maps, I think the base maps and City Nav maps are one and the same. The City Nav update should be all that you need.

Some handheld units have a limited amount of memory so they come preloaded with only high level base maps. They have a few megabytes of memory available to load detailed maps for a limited area such as a large city from your PC. For these units, the base maps would be updated with a firmware upgrade and the detailed maps are updated with an upgrade of the software on your PC.

See for yourself...

Press the "Spanner/Wrench" icon | "Map" | "Map Info"

and it will show you the detailed maps that you have in use. Untick/uncheck []City Navigator North America (not sure exactly what yours is called.)

If you back your way out of there and go to "View Map" or "Browse Map", you'll be using the data from the Basemap. You'll then be able to see the relative lack of information (and probably, how old it is!). The Basemap is the one that gets used when you zoom right out, or browse to a part of the world not covered by your detail map.

The basemap lives in GMAPBMAP.IMG and your City Navigator map is GMAPPROM.IMG

Don't forget to re-enable City Navigator again afterwards!
