According to the specs the

According to the specs the 1690 does not play mp3.You will need to use wav file for the alert. You will also need to install sox.exe to your computer in the same location poiloader is located.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .Once you finish just name the wav file the same as the Redlight cameras except for the extensions.Place in same folder you have Redight cameras.csv.Then run poiloader.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

I had the same problem with 255w. Latest version of POI loader and sox.exe helped!

im using a mac

is there a way to add the sound on a mac?

Don't know if this info on Gary Hayman's site is

still up to date but --

"ATTENTION MAC OWNERS: Don Allen writes, "For what it's worth, I'm successfully loading WAV files onto my Nuvi 200 using POI loader version 2.0.2.1 Beta WITHOUT having SOX.EXE present at all. This on a Mac running OSX 10.5.5. Sweet. I'm creating my .WAV files at that AT&T Labs website that creates voices. Maybe they're already in the proper format and need nothing done to them to work on the nüvi?"

(January 2009) Jed Clear writes, "...Seems like the officially released POILoader for Mac (ver. 2.0.1) doesn't support WAV files. You need to use the 2.0.2.1 Beta version. I don't think sox.exe is needed (or would work anyhow) on the Mac, but I only tested with a WAV file in the correct mono encoding. You do have a note about using 2.0.2.1, but no link to it. A link to v2.0.2.0 Beta version can be found here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32218&vid=....
Tested [by Jed Clear] with MacOSX 10.5.6 Intel and a nuvi 265WT."

Here's a link to the article on Gary's site so you can read all of the article.
