Warning for Older Nuvi Cigarette plugs with FM receivers.......

Let me share what happened to us today, so that you can learn what might happen and keep an eye out for it....

We rushed to the car to go somewhere this evening, and mounted the GPS, and draped the cable over the rear view mirror, and plugged the FM receiver into the cigarette lighter.. Nothing happened....

I then noticed something rolling loose below the lighter plug.... and a fuse loose on the floor....

The front of the FM Receiver/ Power Plug came off....

After it was all over, I realized the front screws on/off to gain access to the fuse, and along with the fuse is a metal circular rim for the ground spring connections of the plug, a plastic screw in piece that screws it all together, and a metal BB looking thing that provides connection from fuse to center +12v part of cigarette lighter....

Of course, at the time I had NO IDEA how many parts there were, nor no idea how they all went together...

It took a few minutes to corral the 5 parts: Receiver, fuse, metal rim, plastic screw in piece, and metal part, and determine which piece went where..... But eventually did....

It was after it was all back together that I found the 660 still didn't power up.... But neither did cigarette Lighter element.... So the metal "Ring" must have shorted out the 20A Fuse in the car!!!

We went to our destination running on Garmin Battery Power, with me learning that the 660 goes into power save mode in between turns.....

When we got home, we found the blown 20A fuse in the car.... and replaced it.... and tested the Garmin -- which worked fine....

MORAL OF STORY:

When putting the Garmin in place, give the front of the FM Receiver/Power Plug a tightening twist, before plugging it in..... Because the loose parts Can and Will Blow the accessory fuse in the car if they are allowed to go Loose In the Lighter!!!!

.

I've never had that happen. Ever. But then again, once I plug a device in, I don't move it, except for straight-in, straight-out.

But, thanks for the heads-up!

me too

Had that very thing happen to me while traveling. Luckily all the pieces fell in my lap as I was getting it set up in the rent car.

Miss Poi can you merge this

I feel your pain...

The same thing happened to me when I had to use a rental car while my car was in the shop being repaired. Told my kids to get the gps unit out the rental car and it just so happened that when it came out and fell on the floor they picked all of the pieces up and brought them with them. I blew 8 fuses trying to put it in myself before I realized the little black piece keeps the metal thingy from touching the inside of the cigarette lighter and blowing the fuses! I have the nuvi 780. Good post.

Warning for Older Nuvi Cigarette plugs with FM receivers.......

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the tip. Garmin

Thanks for the tip. Garmin should add the assemble instruction to their manual. smile

Thanks for the reminder.

I am very careful on inserting and pulling out the plug. My wife on the other hand is not quite so careful. I have to remind her to be careful on how she inserts the plug.

I've had this happen with a

I've had this happen with a radar detector adapter, it took me hours to get the little metal tip from underneath the center console where it wedged in the transmission linkage

It is...

It is included in the 1490T manual on page 48...I am sure it is also included in the manual on any of the units that come with the traffic feature.

This is not the first time

This is not the first time that this was mentioned in the forums but remains very sage advice.

After reading that first thread and then checking and finding that my adapter was not tight I routinely check it every time I plug in or remove the plug from the lighter.

Loosing those parts would not be an enjoyable experience!

Be well,
Rob

Maps -> Wife -> Garmin 12XL -> StreetPilot 2610 -> Nuvi 660 (blown speaker) -> Nuvi 3790LMT

Happened out of the box

Long ago when my 660 was new this happened to me when I took it out of the box. Garmin sent me a new one free which had a year of traffic on it instead of the short time on the original. I don't think I've unpluged it more than 2 or 3 times since.

Two Socket Sizes

On a somewhat related note, be aware that there are two sizes of lighter/accessory sockets. Most common is the smaller U.S. size, but there is also a European DIN size that is slightly larger in diameter and sometimes a 'normal' plug fits a bit loose in it (wobbles some). That might exacerbate problems.

I can't remember where I've gotten them but you used to be able to buy a short plastic sleeve that would fit into a DIN sized socket so the US plugs would fit tighter at the top (no wobble).

For what it's worth. grin

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Good advice

I had to fix my niece's power adapter the same way. She lost the spring, but since I always have parts in stock (I'm an EE) it wasn't difficult to find one that fit. Same problem: the ring got loose and the whole thing came out, with the spring flying somewhere out of sight.
