Getting lost in Grand Canyon Village

I visited 8 Nov 2010 (actually 2009), and arrived at 8 pm. My last visit had been 1976. I was guided by GPS and SA 2009, but they didn't help much. The streets were not as SA indicated, and the directional signs were not very readable. The printed maps at Mather Campground were more useful than SA's map to locate a campsite the first time. The GPS was handy to return to the site in the dark. I also had trouble finding a cafeteria, which was not where the computer indicated. I think my problem was a basic inaccuracy in SA's map of the Village.

My experience with SA, the 2008 version was it wasn't worth the cost of the CD it was distributed on. Tried to route across the country to a subdivision that had been in place for about 5 years. SA didn't even know the area existed. SA couldn't find one of the largest military bases on the West Coast either. And trying to get from Fresno, CA to the 17 Mile Drive in Monterrey - forget about it - Route cannot be calculated even though it showed all the roads, it couldn't get from point A to point B more times than my Garmin with 2007 maps.

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

At the risk of seeming unenlightened, please tell me what "SA" stands for.

SA = Street Atlas

It's a DeLorme product. PC based mapping software you can hook a GPS receiver to and use as a PC based unit.

Streets & Trips is the other major player in this arena along with Google, Bing, MapQuest, Yahoo on the web.

I use SA for "Street Atlas"

I use SA for "Street Atlas" and S&T for "Streets & Trips", plus the year of the edition. While I was getting lost in the Village I was also running S&T 2009 on my laptop, but I didn't think to consult it.
By the way, there is a POI file here for the Grand Canyon South Rim, but it shows "Hermits Rest" as being on the North Rim. I think it's a mistake in the file.
Both SA & S&T show very little info about the Grand Canyon, and a novice to the park will have a hard time in the dark. I spent the next day exploring the rim and found many features, such a place to park about 30 feet from the rim in the heart of the Village (not shown on maps) plus a place to park 50 yards from the shuttle bus terminal for Hermits Rest road, things like that.
