Do Custom POIs in gpx files require both a <cmt> and <desc>?

I've been using the feature of Extra_POI_Editor on Custom POI gpx files to remove a "cmt" field when it is the same as the "desc" field. There's no reason to have the same thing repeated twice when I hit "More" when displaying a Custom POI.

I randomly looked through some of these POIs on my Zumo and found that certain POIs did not show the "More" button though there is a description for each POI. The only way I can get them all to show the "More" button is to run these gpx files through MapSource to put the "cmt" back in, repeating the "desc" field.

Has anyone dug this deeply into gpx files and have a better solution than having duplicate fields?

CMT & DESC in GPX

Mt understanding is the fields are optional - as just about everything is in a GPX except for LAT/LON & NAME.

The GPX format allows greater flexibility in creating a POI file and is necessary for Bluetooth to dial the phone numbers. Some of us have been playing with additional commands available in the GPX format such as font colors. bold facing, drawing lines and the like.

In my own GPX files I have the basic information in the normal fields but use the comment and description fields for additional information such as amenities offered, hours of operation and the like. There is no need to repeat the information such as address and phone in the comments or description.

"More" Button

My 750 will only show the "More" button when the info won't fit on the first screen. If everything is displayed on the first screen then there is no need for a second. I don't use Extra_POI_Editor, I use GeePeeEx and it has a preview function so I can see what the display will look like.

Why doesn't the More button appear on my Zumo for every POI?

Now that the MapSource 6.16.0.3Beta displays the Garmin contact fields, there's no need to repeat the address information in the description field. Prior to that, it was the only way to see this information in MapSource.

My question was "Why doesn't the More button appear on my Zumo for every POI that has a description field?" In one gpx file, I have 135 POIs, all of which have the episode information of a food show, yet the More button only appears on about half of them and the More button is the only way to see that information. The main display page ONLY shows the contact information. If I let MapSource save the gpx, it saves the same text in BOTH the comment and description fields. Then every POI has a More button, but the text gets displayed twice on the Zumo.

More

As otherwise stated, it can depend on the amount of information for the entry and how it is entered. Have you compared two records from the file - one that has the More button activated and one that doesn't?

If you can decipher the XML code, looking at the raw GPX can answer a lot of your questions about differences. You will be able to see how the record is formatted and where the "missing" data resides. From there you can go back to the file maintainer and suggest corrections.

Of course it could be as simple as the episode information or whatever you are looking for is missing from the record.
