ICBC expanding red light camera program across province
2010/04/26

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Drivers be warned! ICBC is expanding its red light camera program province-wide. More than 140 cameras are about to be installed.

Currently there are cameras at 120 different intersections in British Columbia, but only 30 are active. Under the expansion, each of the sites will have a camera, but they won't be activated 24 hours a day.

ICBC's Adam Grossman says they'll be turned on at the time of day when stats show there is the greatest risk for a crash. "This program is not in place to generate tickets. The program is in place to save lives and reduce serious injuries. It's there to prevent crashes, prevent injuries and prevent fatalities. That's absolutely the number one goal."

Grossman can't say yet where or when the cameras will be installed. "Maybe the Lower Mainland would have more than other areas of the province just by shear volume. We've looked at sites all across the province. We assessed more than 14,000 locations."

ICBC is still in discussions with local municipalities who have to give the idea the green light.

Tickets?

The program is not in place to generate tickets? But that will be the end result i'm sure. Curious to see what they will do at Canada Way and Edmonds. They haven't bin able to keep the Cameras in the boxes for years now. Some one keeps breaking them. I drive home past there every afternoon and have yet to see them go off.
