thanks

Thanks for the update

I'm glad to see that,

I'm glad to see that, because all of the Ebay sellers have gone to almost $100.00. They used to sell it at $87.00

Map updates

I think I paid Amazon somewhere around $79 for lifetime updates. About Christmas time.

Tempting...

It is tempting. I believe Amazon.com had a one day sale on April 4th for $69.99. I missed it and now check daily for another sale. Since I just got the 2011.10 free update, I can wait a while to see when/if it drops further. I hate paying more than I have to grin

thanks..

I've been waiting for the next price drop.

Beware

I have the lifetime update but remember the lifetime map is tied up with your current unit or guarantee until 2014 or whenever garmin have a contract with navteq.

So if you purchase a new unit?

Does this mean the lifetime map/or the 2014 maps are only usable on the old unit?

YEP

Lifetime of the current unit,,,do not drop it...

You can drop it

BUT it has to go to garmin to get it repaired/replaced. They will then transfer your map subscription to the new replaced unit, I have a 650 that i sent to them, kept the lifetime maps for it.

At What Price

Which can wind up costing more than the price of a new device if it is out of warranty. Just to replace a worn out battery, Garmin will charge around $175. I intend to replace mine myself some day when it wears out. But any other repair may cost even more.

Basically, they want these devices to be throw-away and charge repair prices accordingly. It would be nice if the Numaps Lifetime service was transferable to another device, at least one time. It might encourage people to spring for a new device if they know their map investment is protected. They could put in a safeguard such as the new device only being eligible for a map that you have not yet downloaded (to keep you from updating the old device and then the new device to the same release) or prevent you from switching the subscription back to a device that was once registered. That would prevent you from doing and "every other release" update on two devices.

Pond jumping?

I sort of think you're from across the pond. Just to be sure you know, the City Navigator North America NT lifetime updates will work only on a GPS with an earlier version of the same map. It won't install on a nuvi with only European maps. But as I think you know this already and will be installing it on a GPS with North American maps. If you haven't done this update before, check the threads here. At times, you may think the system is frozen--it isn't--be patient. You will need a broadband internet connection, too, and even with broadband, it's good to reserve 2-3 hours for the combo download and installation.

Have a great vacation!

if you consider

If you consider being north of the Great Lakes across the pond, then he will be "pond jumping."

Spot On

Well done that man, you are spot on with your analysis. I am orignally from across the pond but have been happily residing north of the border for the past 30 years. Must be the accent that gave me away. grin

Actually you have stated several times you are residing in the land of Sgt. Preston of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and his loyal dog King.

Back Home

Finally got time to do my Lifetime map update. I thought the "lifetime" in the description was for the maps, not the length of time it took to download and install. grin wink
Next time I will connect the laptop by cable rather than depend on wireless. rolleyes

Plenty of disk space needed, too !

Just incredible how much space gets needed on the PC when actually RUNNING the setup ! Oh well, it's a company laptop, I'm sure I can delete a few files here and there razz
