Software to use for POIs

If I can't actually go to the place, I use GOOGLE EARTH for the GPS coordinates.

What do you use?

To create the POI file (or convert a POI file to GPX or CSV), I use POI Edit.

I find both of these programs very good. What programs do you all use?

software

Sometimes I get coordinates via Mapsource in conjunction with one of my Garmin or third party maps. Then save the points as a gpx file. One advantage of doing it this way is that you do not need a connection to the internet.

Other times I use Extra POI Editor to create and/or edit pois. It will automatically find coordinates given the address of the point. It is a great program and is free.

Else if I know the coordinates, I simply use notepad to make a csv file.

It depends

It depends. I will use several programs but at least 2 use the same geocode source, Google. I also use Yahoo!, Map Point, Streets & Trips, and Mapquest.

Excel. Quick, easy and I can cut and paste.

For bulk work using a CSV as input, GPSVisualizer and EPE. But to create the base input, I do all my work with Excel.

Now Google maps provides the same thing (Lat/Lon tooltip or marker). Gadget Guy already mentioned it here:

You shouldn't pick on yourself

Be kind to yourself and tell yourself you are one smart, intelligent human being. I do that to myself all the time and, guess what, it works. grin

Call me old fashioned

I use a simple text editor like notepad to create POI files and save them with a CSV extention. I find the cut and paste easier than a spreadsheet.

I like GOOGLE earth to obtain LAT/Long, but I recently discovered a GOOGLE maps option that I think I will like even better. See thread:

Google Maps has a send command in the upper right corner. This will send the location via usb cord directly into your GPS.
I use this all the time for garage sale locations.
