Power Supply for Nuvi 750

Can anyone recommend an external power supply I can use at home while listening to the mp3 player ??? I would prefer not to use the car mount adapter. Is it possible to power it via the usb port so as to maintain operation? Also, I want to avoid connecting to my computer.

Garmin sells an A/C adapter

Garmin sells an A/C adapter for your unit that would work great. It would be listed on their site under the nuvi 750/ accessories. Hope that helps.

If you don't want to use the mounting bracket you seem to rule out being able use an AC/12v adapter.

If you don't want to connect to a USB port on a computer it seems you have ruled out all options except buying a custom AC/12v adapter which claims to be able to power a 750 in "normal" mode. I have seen them advertised on-line but don't know if they will actually allow it to boot in normal mode.

It IS possible make a custom USB connector to power the 750 from a wall bug that will put out about 500ma or more at 5v dc. You would need a 5 pin/wire USB connector/cable to do that and bridge a couple wires with a resistor to get it to boot in normal mode. MOST USB cables are 4 only wires.

In my opinion, the cheapest way is to run it off a USB port of a PC. Not all Nuvi's work this way but a 750/760 can run in normal mode from a USB port. Here's how....

1. Attach the 750 to PC/USB(it comes up in mass storage mode)
2. Put the 750 power switch in "screen lock mode" (to the right)
3. Do a "safely remove USB hardware" from the pc and the 750/760 will boot in normal operational mode.
4. After it boots, put the 750 switch in the center/normal position and you are good to go.

You then patch the audio out of the 750 into the PC if it has decent audio or alternatively use the FM transmitter with a stereo system (if it's close by).

Yes... as others have said, A motorola charger will work. The one I have is from a RAZR3 and is 5V, 550ma USB. I had forgotten that one because I don't use it for the GPS. Mine boots the 750 in mass storge mode and then with the screen locked, if I remove and re insert the USB power it re-boots in normal mode.

Ditto, and it does work like a charm!

Moto also

I also use a Motorola phone charger. You have to be careful which one to use though. Some will put it in data or connected or whatever they call it mode where it only charges and cannot be used.

The one I have acts like it's on the dock and allows it to be used while charging.

I think Garmin wants something like $40 for their charger, you can pickup a Moto charger at a dollar store or online for just a few bucks.

Nuvi 750 Power Suggestions

Thank you all for your helpful comments. I will look at the Motorola chargers as well.

USB Power adapter

I use this one with my 755T: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230456620....

For < $5 including shipping, it works great. When connected to the 755T, it first comes up in PC mode for about 15 seconds, then automatically restarts in navigation mode and is fully operational.

I bought the unit you recommended and it does function fine. One difference, after the 750 powered up it remained in the "computer" mode. After briefly disconnecting and reconnecting power, it then booted up to full functionality where I can use the mp3 player while the battery is again charging.
