MD Cameras Don't Raise Enough Money!

Here's one for ya! The article says MD speed cameras aren't paying for themselves:

Not Enough Md. Speed Camera Fines to Cover Costs

Posted: Apr 15, 2010 10:46 AM

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- The head of Maryland's highway administration says speed cameras used throughout the state are not issuing enough fines to pay for the cost of operation.

But State Highway Administrator Neil J. Pedersen says that it's worth it to the state to pay additional money for the cameras if it means people are driving more carefully.

Pedersen said Wednesday that police have noticed fewer crashes and his employees and contractors have seen fewer vehicles going more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit in the work zones where the cameras are used.

Maryland has used speed cameras since last October to zap speeders with $40 fines, if they are caught going at least 12 miles an hour over the posted limit in some areas near schools and work zones.

Talk about selective reporting!!!

They took about 15 paragraphs from the paper this morning and reduced it down to 3. At least the paper said where the two camera vans rotated through and that one of the zones had a 65 MPH speed limit so "it was hard to catch speeders." The other zones were 50 and 55.

The article also mentioned that over 450 people die in construction zones each year in MD. But then what do you expect from talking heads with an attention span of 15 seconds or less.

MD Speed Cameras

Just another example of Maryland's overspending. It's budget shortfalls are humongous & not getting any better. Although it's not likely, MD really needs a change in leadership & a policy that you can't do anything that involves additional spending without provided a source of funding.

My guess is that the elections will bring a partial revolution because people are simply very angry.

That from someone who's lived in MD since 1970.

It would be easy only if we could remove Baltimore City from the state...

Thanks

Thanks, Scott Dog, for the complete article. I see the WBOC article missed the main point: MD to spend $5M on the camera program. I thought it funny that SHA spokesman Buck said it was hard to catch speeders at the ICC site because the speed limit is 65 mph. Maybe he should have said there just aren't many speeders there...

Playing with numbers

Sound like someone is playing with the numbers to try and justify raising the fine amount.

Sorry, Bob. The newspaper is newsday.com and it is now a pay site. The link that I see as a subscriber will not work for others.

Would you help me understand how you decided that someone was "playing with the numbers" and how that might be used to "justify raising the fine amount"?

I read the article several times and was struck by the statement from David Buck, a spokesman for the Maryland State Highway administration who was quoted as saying "There's no price tag on the safety of the roads and saving lives."

From that I concluded that the MSHA was willing to NOT make money on cameras if safety was the result. Can you read that statement any other way?
