Does anyone know if the Nuvi 765T is being discontinued? On the Garmin site it still shows but when you choose the wide screen filter block on the left side it does show up there. There have been many problems with this unit and I am wondering if Garmin is finally admitting it by discontinuing the model.
Hopefully not since it is a great unit.
The 7x5 series has not been discontinued yet (other than the 785T with the MSN receiver). But considering that it is almost 2 years old (introduced in mid 2008), I will not be surprised if it is discontinued soon. That said, there isn't really anything else in the current Garmin lineup that has the rich feature set of the 7x5.
Some people feel that whenever a unit series shows up at a great price on the Costco site, it means it's a goner.
And the 765 was just offered at a super prie which INCLUDED lifetime updates.
Costco shows it as sold out now and no further units will be available.
For the record, you can always see which Garmin units are discontinued by checking the Garmin website at:
I find they keep this page up to date pretty well.
That is why I wanted one. I happen to like having an MP3 player and FM transmitter. Comparing the 765T to the higher end 1260T, 1390T and 1490T :
No routes except for the 1490T
No 3D view
Bluetooth with A2DP
These newer devices have less capability than then 765T.
On another note, my 765T which I have had a month, has started acting weird. I am going to try a master reset and see if that clears it up. Suddenly it is saying no traffic is being received (diagnostics say otherwise) and it has crashed a few times on an RTL trap. Currently running the 3.90 firmware it came with.
Just yesterday I saw the 765T offered in my local Costco store for CAD $249... and they were plenty...
I got mine from Santa back in December, and actually paid less then after instant rebate... There is no rebates on current offer though - does not look like they try to clear the stock...
There is a traffic related bug in firmware 3.90 where it will not maintain a consistant traffic signal. Some users have down leveled to 3.60 because of this and/or the typing lag on the on the POI spell interface. Both of these bugs were introduced in firmware 3.90 and were not present in 3.60. Hopefully Garmin will fix this in a future update.
no to 3.9? is that the latest?
the bug that i had on my first 765t made it croak that i had to return it. garmin had a mandatory download of a firmware since.
I have a 765T which I just got from Costco with update 3.9. There is an issue with the keyboard with the second letter you type (points of interest and then spell) goes dead on the second letter and eventually catches up. Returned the first one thinking it was defective but this one does it too. Also it has a mind of its own many times not putting in the letter you type...it likes to pick one somewhere around it (I have calibrated it several times to no avail)....Garmin tells me there is a problem and plan on fixing it...see below...
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this issue.
Our sincerest apologies for this issue, as we are aware of this glitch, and we are currently working on a fix. We have not been informed of a date of release, but it is hopefully going to be released within the next week or so.
This is a high-priority update, as we understand that many device's are exhibiting this behavior.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and should you need further assistance, please reply to this email.
If the firmware update release is true as being "high priority", that is good news and hopefully it will resolve lingering issues with the unit without creating new issues.
It's time for new, working firmware for the 765t!
Sounds like it should have been discontinued before it hit the market.
I just finished a 4000 ml. trip with my Nuvi 765t with software version 3.60 and had no problems. It even showed two lane assists in Indianapolis, IN. Couldn't be happier.
Yes, I still have.v3.60 on my 765T and it is working great. Heard about problams with the last release so I have been waiting to update. Looking forward to taking it on vacation to New Mexico in May!
The secret there is version 3.6... Everything went south with the version 3.9.
Does the 755T have the same problems?
All the models in the 7x5 series use the exact same firmware and thus have the same issues. The only difference between the 765 and 755 is the 765 has Bluetooth while the 755 does not.
Yes, the two identified 3.90 firmware issues (traffic signal failure and lag on POI spell interface) apply to all the 7x5 series. I don't get a traffic signal where I live, and the typing lag isn't that bad once you get used to it, so I have kept 3.90 on my 755T. I am not aware of any other problems with this firmware.
What is traffic signal failure??? You are much more forgiving than I am...There should be no issues at all on these units. Garmin has to stop putting out product and fixes that don't work properly...
Garmin needs to stop issuing software updates like it has been or it will gain the reputation of the recent Toyota Motor Company!!
I did not intend to excuse Garmin's firmware bugs. I agree they need to do better. I decided not to backlevel from 3.90 to 3.60 because there is no traffic service where I live and I seldom use the POI spell interface. I have found no other problems with 3.90 so I didn't see a reason to backlevel. But there is no excuse for the bugs.
I update my nuvi 775T to 4.90 firmware. Beside little lag on POI interface, everything else seem to work fine include traffic signal.
What is traffic signal failure???
See the following topic beginning with the post from Houdini1...
Monday was the first time I observed the traffic signal failure and then again yesterday. I have had the 765T for one month. The only thing that changed was I did a screen recalibration over the weekend as it seemed to be a bit off. I had debated downgrading to 3.60 but the device came with 3.90 and all indications are that there should be a fix within a month or so if this and other forums are correct.
I just got one and love it. The new 1400 models seem to leave out a lot of things that the older models can do.
I love mine to except for the calibration and keyboard issues...
Lag is not good for an update. Is it noticable?
Here is another link that shows others have the same problem...
I sure hope not...
Amazon puts them on gold box special for 180 every now and then. Great price.
New Egg sell refurbished units for $179 which is a great price. I have purchased 2 765T units and they work perfectly. My wife & I have been perfectly happy. I am thinking about buying a 3rd as a gift for a family member.
Bass Pro has them for $199.
I will make the assumption you have not updated your unit to the 3.9 software release.....Many problems...
still has a market, with good feature set
That unit does have a great set of features. I had two brand new that were the pits (calibration and keyboard problems). Gave up and went to the 1490T and couldn't be happier. Even though the 1490T doesn't have the MP3 player or FM transmitter that doesn't bother me because I never used them anyway. There are so many people having problems with the 765T and Garmin keeps saying they are going to fix them but it has been over 6 months they have known of the problems.
I hope not. There are many feature on 7X5 that newer model don't offer.
Thanks for the link.
The 765 has the GTM20 Traffic receiver... correct ?
I unfortunately updated my firmware to 3.90 6 months ago not knowing about these problems ahead of time. I have experienced the traffic reviever all of a sudden tapping out, but it would always come back on when I restarted the unit. A couple days ago, the traffic reciever tapped out like it always did, but this time, when I turned the unit back on, the traffic did not come back and has not come back since. All of the other times this happened, the traffic reciever would come back on again when I powered the unit back on. I'm not sure whether my traffic recciever just died on its own, or the software update is behind this problem.
I'm even getting rural traffic along the wisconsin-minnesota borders near Stillwater.
You may have a short in the powercord that has finally given up the ghost.

If you had an old version on your 765T, such as 3.60, then you have the option to downgrade to 3.60. My 765T shipped with 3.90 and has a V11 processor board which I understands prevents me from being able to downgrade unless I want to get stuck in a white startup screen
i wish support doesnt leave as well. lately ive been lucky not needing to call them, but id hate to call and hear, 'sorry we dont support that old model'
freakn new models every 4 months!!
No Wonder I am having problems with my free Navteq traffic signal. Most of the time, I don't get traffic signal at all and some times it becomes gray on its own. I sent email to garmin last week about the issue thinking that FM traffic signal was not good in Toronto but they recommended me to do reset on FM Traffic on the unit. I have not tested it after that but am going to test it tonight.

Nothing will change. The bug is in the 3.90 firmware. Asking you to do a reset is for giving you the impression you are doing something to fix the problem and lets them close the case. The only fix will be an update to the firmware but I am not holding my breath. I wish I had the option to downgrade to 3.60 but my unit uses a newer processor board (V11) and I understand 3.90 is required in order to support it.
Rookie8155, if your 7x5 came with software 3.8 or 3.9, then you are stuck with these bugs unless/until Garmin releases a new version. However, if it came with 3.6 or older, you can backlevel from 3.9 to 3.6 and eliminate the traffic signal problem.
Aardvark....why don't you return it to Garmin if it is under warranty. The replacement will more than likely have the older version of software. I would just insist since they keep promising an update but one never comes.....
Mine is older unit. So I should put it back to 3.6.
If you want to downlevel, see the information posted by DorkusNimrod in this thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/27696
Thanks for the link. I downloaed firmware 3.60 and installed it on my nuvi 765. I am going to test it now and then I will update the results.
I am already on my second unit and it is only three months old. The first one had the sticky screen and some odd markings on it as well. At this point, trading in a pristine three month old device for a refurbished unit that may or may not have a compatible 3.60 board is rolling the dice.
