No Red/Green/Yellow for traffic after update

i installed a Garmin update for traffic on my Nuvi 660 a week ago and ever since, I don't see the red, green, and yellow colors on the roads indicating where the traffic is and what it's severity level is. I went out to the Garmin site and checked the details for the update and it says, "Fixed issue where traffic lines were drawing on top of roads."

Ummmm. I liked it that way. Is anyone else seeing this problem? Anything I can do about it?

Thanks,
Kathy

I also have a 660, but have not had any problems with traffic. At least not in the Atlanta, GA area.

I have this problem too. I thought it was just me. So what can we do? Complain to Garmin enough and maybe they will issue another update?

Firmware Update

I installed an update about 3 weeks ago to my 765T and my traffic info has become totally useless. It's different then what has been described but still a problem. My traffic indicator on the unit turns gray (supposedly indicating poor reception) and never returns to green, yellow, or red even when I'm in the middle of a known signal area. I've been working with Garmin Techies ever since. They had me send in the receiver for repair and when I got it back....nothing different, still doesn't work. I emailed them again this morning explaining the situation, again, and that I believe it's the update that needs repaired, not our units smile

@ Houdini1

I have the exact same issues Houdini1 describes with the 765 (note this topic is about the 6x0 series with it's own traffic bug). The fault is 100% with firmware v3.90. Upon backdating to firmware v3.60, the issue is gone. It's ridiculous of Garmin having you send back the traffic receiver. Maybe if they did some testing of the firmware themselves before releasing to the unsuspecting public, they'd have better customer relations...

See the link below for another bug in v3.90 along with instructions on backdating to v3.60 which does NOT have the traffic issue.

I noticed the same thing - the gray traffic icon - but I am so stupid, I thought it just was a bad shade of green and meant no traffic issues. Thanks for the information. I think I will uninstall the 3.90 and go back to 3.60.

That's what I did and this

nuvi 660 and version 4.80 software

So I've been going back and forth with Garmin for a few days now. They keep implying (but not explicitly saying) that I don't know what I'm doing. They've suggested:
(1) I did not update all the software to latest
(2) traffic receiver wasn't working
(3) do a complete master reset (to erase corrupt traffic data)

Of course I had to respond each time with proof that those were not the problem. At no time would they even consider that the 4.80 update is at fault. I had even provided screenshots showing that I was getting complete traffic data just it wasn't displaying on the map.

Well, back to v4.70 for me.

Garmin acts a lot like Bose.

Because I haven't seen any traffic either, I sent an email to garmin via MyGarmin login....
Maybe others should do so, too!

So I'm *NOT* crazy!

All this time, I thought it was just me. I just sent an email off to Garmin support too. Maybe we can pester them into fixing it.

I was just going to roll back my version to 4.7 but I can't find it anywhere online. The site I found when I googled had links for all the old nuvi firmware updates but all the links were broken sad

Thats all "fine and dandy" if they mean it, but lets get back to quality testing and re-testing updates as often as needed PRIOR to going out. Then we do not need to be guinea pigs for them to rush updates out.

Well at least they are admitting there's a problem

That's the first step in overcoming anything smile

My 660 works great and I have the latest update.

Was a bit confusing the other day during the snow, though. Wanted me to use alternate routes while it was snowing.

I think the speed sensors in the road were having a problem.

Other than that, it's been very accurate about incidents.

I noticed no traffic icon colour change. I didnt think of it having to do with my firmware update. I did a hard reset, and that fixed it. It does turn grey, I guess indicating a poor signal, but will turn green, yeller and red though! My gripe is with the search character hanging up everytime I type something in, but that is another topic, which I saw somewhere else on here.

Good News, Bad News, Good News

I'm still not getting traffic information... and since there is an issue with V4.80 that Garmin is admitting to.. I asked them in an email if I should go back to V4.70..... I got this email:

So -- I downgraded my Nuvi 660 to V4.70...

After downgrading to V4.70 I found that all my favorites were erased, including HOME, Bluetooth was enabled (It wasn't before), and default vehicle was selected.. Also erased was BOTH of the Lifetime Traffic activation codes..... and attention tone was turned off, and Most Map detail changed to Normal.
However, the bootup picture I changed Remained, as well as POI's and the editing I did on the voice file, along with Garmin Lock (Though Home was removed). All these remained...

I decided to re-calibrate the touchscreen... afterward, I programmed in my Home and a nearby relative, and went toward her house... During this time I got a POI alert, but it was at her house where I learned that the Lifetime Traffic codes were deleted...
Re-entered the Two 25 character passwords, and after that, I Immediately got a traffic Warning!!!
IMMEDIATELY!!!! This has NEVER happened!!! I hit the ! and saw a map... With Yellow Lines on the road!!! I haven't seen a traffic warning in a Couple Months, and especially not as fast as what I just saw!!!!

Yeah.... There is a bug!!!

I reported all this to Garmin

Support replies are totally random

The reply I got to my first reply said a fix was coming "in the next couple of days." So after a week went by, I sent another saying, "OK, a couple of days have passed, where's the fix?" and got a reply saying, "No fix is scheduled."

So I replied to that one saying, "Please escalate this to a supervisor and send instructions on how to roll back to a working version." The reply I got to that one said, "there's no fix scheduled but we don't recommend rolling back to a previous version." This reply came from yet another "Product Support Specialist".

My replies are now getting testier. Today's said, "So if you admit that the current version doesn't work and you aren't planning on fixing it any time soon but you tell me not to roll back to a version that actually does work, what am I supposed to do? This experience is making me want to go out and buy a Tom Tom."

I wonder if that will at least get my request escalated.

Traffic problems with 3.90

I have a 765T and have experienced the same problems with traffic reception as stated above using the 3.90 update. I have also been in contact with Garmin product support. After trying the fixes they recommended and not correcting the problem, support was going to issue an RMA for the power/receiver cord. I reinstalled 3.60 and told support I now had no problem therefore, it could not be the receiver and must be a software problem. I was requested to take Screen Shots of the problem and email it to my support contact which I did. On March 12th I received the following message "...we are going to have to have a more in-depth look at this, so this may take some time for us to look into this issue, as there will be other departments inspecting this issue as well. It may be a week or two before we get any further information, but hopefully if I press the issue it will not take that long."

I will let you all know if If Garmin engineers inform me that they have corrected the problem.

P.S. Thanks NIMROD for posting the 3.60 workaround and how to reinstall 3.60

IT'S NOT THE POWER CORD!

I had the same issue. No matter how much I explained it was a software issue they still wanted to issue an RMA for the power cord/receiver. I went ahead and on my own reinstalled the prior firmware and all was back to normal. When I explained what I had done to the support tech and suggested she pass the fix on to all the support staff I was told that issuing an RMA for the power cord was the standard step in troubleshooting. Okay, but at some point you'd think they would clue in to a specific error with these units and just admit the firmware fault. Had I sent my receiver back on an RMA it would have cost me shipping fees and possible the cost of a new cable that I have no need of. Had I got my fancy new cable back and nothing was fixed I would have been pretty mad.

Typical tech support

skydivemo wrote:

I expect that some of the support staff are off-shore (e.g., India) so they would be on very tightly scripted instructions that they cannot deviate from. I see this RMA step as just like (but more time-consuming and costly than) when my ISP tech support tells me to restart the computer. If I have determined that the computer is not the problem, I simply tell them after a few seconds that it's done when all I did was sit there doing nothing. Often, their job requires them to follow a script.

I gave up

After weekly support requests, each one eliciting a different but equally unhelpful response, I broke down and rolled back to 4.7 and PRESTO! I have traffic display back. This has to be the worst example of "customer support" I have experienced in a long time. I used to sing the praises of my Garmin Nuvi but after this, I would be very hesitant to recommend any Garmin device to anyone.

Hi Guys or Gals,

I'm starting to think all these quirks are Unit related not Software. My unit has the newest map and software. Traffic icon shows all the time, unless i'm playing a cd, guess it needs fm to get started. After its caught i can play a cd and it seems to stay. My keyboard works fine most of the time, the odd time it hangs on C and M i have found. The odd time "three times so far" it will reboot, but comes right back where i left off. The new .40 map sucks as far as i'm concerned, .30 is better in my case, but i'm not going to back. Changing the fm Transmitter strength failed on my unit its stuck at 107. I also remember coming in here and voicing my frustration with my 755t, talking to Garmin, getting a new one...same crap. All about touch screen with that one. But not every one had those problems. Then Costco had the 765t on for cheaper than the 755t. Never looked back, I also know that i got lucky with this unit so far. I can see how frustrated some of you 755t and 765t users are, and know that feeling.
All i can say is that i'm glad i chose to buy my Garmin's at Costco. If you also did likewise keep going back till you get one that works. smile

4.90 fixed it for me too!
Good job everyone bringing this to Garmin's attention.

Waiting for Fix for 765T

I have the traffic problem with the 765T after installing firmware v. 3.90. Working with a product specialist who referred my problem to the engineers. That was two weeks ago. The latest word from him as of Thursday, 3/25/10 is that they are still working on it. I reinstalled v3.60 based on Nimrods suggestion and traffic reception works fine, but I would like to keep my unit up to date with the latest software and am still looking for a fix for v.3.90. Hope springs eternal.

My Nuvi 765T

I have across this thread while looking for some related information. I got a new, not refurbished, 765T in mid-March from Amazon.com during a one-day sale for $184.99. The first one I received had strange markings on the LCD so I returned with without even trying to ascertain what they were. Both units came with V3.90 installed and I did notice the jerkiness in the responsiveness of the device. One thing I do find odd is that both units came with a firmware released in December but the map is 2010.10 which much older.

I am not going to attempt a downgrade to 3.60 since the unit never had anything other than 3.90 since in my possession. Hopefully there will be an update that fixes the responsiveness. I am not sure what is missing in traffic reports since my only experience with Garmin's prior to the 765T is a C550. With the interfaces being quite different, it is like comparing apples to oranges.

NUVI 1450 no color-coded traffic flow in map mode....

Having the same problem. Everything works good except does not show color-coded traffic flow in traffic mode. I know several people with the new software upgrades that are having the same issue.

And it depends on who you get on the phone when you explain the problem. I got a guy the other day, I thing he was in India, who had the brains of a small rock. Finally got somebody that I could talk to and he said many were having the same issue. Downloaded data to garmin and E-mailed it to him (teckie). Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon. I can't believe this upgrade got to the public. There QA must be CRAP...
