Sound files and Music files for Garmin 660

Can I use Wave format for Alert Sounds for Garmin 660 instead of MP3 ?

Yes

That's what I use on my 660. The only additional thing you need is to install a file called sox.exe on your PC.

Here are the details: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16728

You'll find lots more info if you need it by searching for sox.exe in the topics.

Works for me

An Alternative to sox.exe

I have the freeware copy of Real Player and one of the programs that came with it (to be found in the "Real" program folder and accessable from your Start Menu.) is the RealPlayer Converter.

It will take a number of sound files, including wav files and converts them directly to other types, including mp3 files.

An Alternative to sox.exe

will that work? I don't think that's what he needs.

WAV Files

You can't load .wav files onto a Garmin using POI Loader without the sox.exe file in place.

That's Right

But I understood the question to be "instead of mp3 files" and if it's a matter of using sox.exe to convert them while loading... then why not convert them first.

But if it's a matter of using a wav because your unit doesn't play mp3 files, that's a different issue.

You don't need sox.exe to do the conversion from mp3 to wav. There are several free audio programs available to do that conversion.

However, once you have the files in wav format, you MUST have the sox.exe file in the POI Loader program folder when you run POI Loader. Without it, POI Loader will not properly install the wav files on your Garmin and all you will get for an audio alert is the default "ding" leaving you scratching your head - what went wrong? confused

Yep

That's what I said too.

I thought the question was how to use a wav file on a machine that plays mp3 files... and I suggested, instead of sox.exe, one of the free-to-use converters to make wav files into mp3 files...

Because... why would you convert an mp3 to a wav, just to "convert" it using sox.exe, on an mp3-capable machine.

My understanding was that sox.exe was originally for using wav files on machines that didn't have mp3 capability, (e.g. the 200 series.)

Some users have had problems

Some users have had problems with the mp3 songs skipping when getting the alert.Users have reported using wav files in place of the mp3 alert file to stop the problem. The sox.exe has to be place on the computer in the same area as the poiloader for the wav file to work.

That's exactly what happened to me with my 660 when I first got it 2 years ago. I spent a lot of time converting the mp3 alert files to wav format and adjusting the volume levels on the PC so they were consistant when played through the 660. Now, I hear alerts without causing my mp3 songs to skip and they each play at a similar volume level.

Then, the most recent firmware release for the 6X0 series was supposed to fix the skipping problem. But since mine was working the way I wanted with the wav files, I had no desire to spend the time to go back to mp3 alerts to test the new firmware. neutral

Wonder if any of the updates

Wonder if any of the updates did fix the skipping problem?Don't remember any recent posts about it.

yes, but no

They fixed the skipping problem by letting the MP3 play at reduced volume. So it's not a "fix" fix, it's a work around. And it introduced still other problems with custom alerts. They play at the same time as navigation directions so you get "Approaching a Turn left Redlight on Camera Main"

Where do you put sox.exe

Where do you get sox.exe and where do you put it (once you get it) so poiloader uses it?

Thanks

Thanks charlesd45

This is off topic, but I appreciate the way you link to an "anchor thread" as you did in the above post instead of repeating the same information in multiple posts. I wish some other users would follow your good example.

That's why I stayed with wav files. The "fix" didn't sound like much of a fix!
