Garmin keeps wanting to take me off Express lanes? Why?

I hope that someone can help me with this problem?

I live in Toronto and regularly drive on the 401 series highways which have both express lanes and regular collector lanes. Now here's the problem: everytime I decide to drive on the express lanes, my 255w ALWAYS tells me to leave the express lanes and go onto the collectors AT EVERY SINGLE express lane exit.

It doesn't matter what traffic conditions are like or that the express lanes might be faster, without fail my gps will annoyingly tell me to exit express lanes and go onto the collector lanes every single time an exit comes up. Is this a normal thing for all Garmin gps when it comes to express lanes? Because if I were travelling in an unfamiliar area, I'd probably follow my gps' directions. So is there anyway to get my Garmin to stop this behavior? neutral

An Opinion Was Forwarded...

Elsewhere, this issue was presumed to perhaps be because the route is shorter (being closer to the offramp) and no "slower" because the express lanes have the same speed limit.

For what it's worth, they suggested some "left side" way points, not that I thought it was an effective way to do it.

Also, check your avoidances. If you avoid carpool lanes, that might make a difference (though it didn't seem to matter for the poster there.)

I see the opposite here...

When I am driving on I-270 North in Maryland, my Garmin always wants me to take the express lanes. It is very annoying that I am driving 65 but it still wants me to get off.

Don't Always Do What Jill Says

I haven't had this happen to me in spite of having a road with express lanes - I am not navigating when on this road. The voice is set at Jill. Perhaps she doesn't want to be on the express lanes because of the lack of options when traffic backs up?

More important, take Jill's suggestions with a grain of salt. The latest Jill downloads have improved to the point where she has a great deal of annoyance when she says, "recalculating." So you see I don't always do what she says.

However there was one time that Jill was absolutely right! Southbound on I-87, a limited-access expressway entering New York City, running Clear Channel traffic, I was in the left lane at 70 mph (55mph speed limit) along with everyone else in heavy traffic when Jill says, "Traffic Alert! Road closed in one mile!" In 30 seconds I was in a panic stop as traffic backed up. Without her warning, I may have had an accident.

Yes, all GPS units have Quirks.

I find the same thing going across the top of Toronto. "Emily" gets more and frustrated with me because I stay in the core. Westbound, once I'm past Yorkdale, she finally agrees that the core is the better route. I assume the curves in the expressway make the Collectors fractionally shorter.

Short answer, your GPS has many quirks, some of which make no apparent sense. Better to check the calculated route for such behaviour, before you start the trip.

Similar but different quirk

When I head up to the NW side of Tucson on I-10, my unit invariably tells me to exit at Ina Road, then take the frontage road the last 2.5 miles to Cortaro Road. Weird how it would think that getting off the interstate, waiting at a light, then drive up the frontage road with a lower speed limit is "Faster" but it does, every time.

Head back towards town it always instructs me to get on I-10 immediately

Express lanes

It's Garmin's routing engine and poor use of map info.

Last night coming home it routed me from one Interstate to another and correctly told me to stay in the express lanes. Then, later and further along the same expressway it told me to get out of the express lanes. The reason, the straight line distance. At the first the straight line from my current point to my destination was more toward the express lanes, but 5 miles up the direction had changed enough that the local lanes were closer - but definitely not faster.
