Map Share

I don't think that it works too well.

My personal experience is that I don't see much change in the maps.

I have even put in a new major road in my area that was not on the 840 maps but there was no change until the 845 maps came out?????

Don't Give Up

I have noticed that it may take several map updates, but the changes do come. For example, after several iterations of adding speed limits to some local roads I frequently drive, the last map finally had them.

mapshare

Physical addition or deletion of roads on the current map is not a function of mapshare.

Takes a long time....

The main thing I don't like about MapShare is the amount of time it takes to get the information verified and updated on a map release.

True, but...

...at least you can give feedback. That was one of the reasons I chose to switch from Garmin to TomTom.

The information sharing is a great idea but it takes too long for the updates to appear on your maps.Hopefully in the near future all updates will be instant (even while we are driving). Wishful thinking I guess

I like the idea, but I am not sure how well it is working. I would hope that TOMTOM improves on it over time.

OK

Going back to my OP, how would you improve it?

Map share?

I think MAP SHARE is great! I usually get MAP UPDATES VERIFIED BY TOMTOM. If you want things to change quicker, you can change the settings to be more flexible, but you don't know how accurate the other changes are.

I don't think you can throw out inaccurate map changes before they are installed when you get them from regular users and not TOMTOMs verified changes. If this could be done, THAT would be an improvement!

you can submit map errors to Garmin too through their website.

how is it different?

Exactly - if Map Share takes a long time to propagate changes, how is it any different from Garmin users submitting updates to Garmin and waiting for an eventual change? I thought the whole idea behind Map Share was that you could choose to use user-generated map updates instantly, and you'd have nearly real-time maps, at the possible expense of accuracy.

You are correct. I have mapshare set to "High", Use map changes verified by TomTom and from trusted sources. My North America map is less than 3 months old & has 1638 Mapshare corrections in use.

New Maps vs Mapshare Updates

My comment about the changes being made eventually, refers to the new maps that come out quarterly. They do not always implement all of the mapshare changes right away. Sometimes after a new map comes out, I have to go back and make the same changes I made on the earlier map, because the newer map did not incorporate all of the mapshare updates.

I do get mapshare updates every time I log on to TomTom Home, in addition to my own updates.

Thats too many errors imo.
May be they shoud give you a free update in that case. Whether you use Garmin or TomTom, I think they both have their own share of errors in their maps. My garmin is showing my own house 6 houses down the road. I have submitted the correction but it's still not corrected on new map and they have 2 or 3 new map updates that came out after i got the unit.

please explain

I found out about TomTom mapshare shortly after buying a Garmin nuvi. I was disappointed that I hadn't done enough research, because I though that mapshare would be great for adding new roads, particularly for those of us like me who resist buying new map updates (that tend to still be out of date or introduce other problems).

But in talking to a friend who got a TomTom, mapshare doesn't seem to let one add roads. You can block a road, or change the direction of a one-way street, but I'm told that there is no way to add roads. And when I looked at the TomTom for myself it seemed to confirm this.

Now you write of adding a road with mapshare. If this can really be done then the feature interests me once again, but your post also says that you are not satisfied with the experience.

So can roads really be added? Can you explain how this is done? And do you have any additional insight on what went wrong in the post that I quoted from?

New roads or physical road corrections can be SUBMITTED to TT thru mapshare, but mapshare updates will not include these submissions. They are included in new maps.

thanks

OK, thanks. So to answer the original question, I'm very disappointed by mapshare and will NOT be switching to Tomtom for my next GPS to get it. When a GPS system allows me to add a new road (perhaps by simply selecting a new road function while driving it), then that brand will get my interest and perhaps my business. Without the ability to add new roads, mapshare is a disappointment.
