I have a nuvi 1490t.
1997 Park Avenue Buick
I got a mount from Gilson that is made from the same material as the disk that it ships with it was a little bigger and square.
My Buick Park ave ashtray flips down real nice I kept looking at it when I opened it and thought gee I wish I could put the nuvi there.
I bought the mount and it came with adhesive strips i placed the adhesive strips on to the metal ashtray that you pop out and empty. And then the windshield mount to that looks almost built in!
It is very stable and solid I cant close the ashtray though unless I pop out the ashtray i just leave the mount on it and pop it out and put it in the Console. If Some one would like a pic I would be happy to post one umm if I knew how.

Mount

I tried them all and fell in love with the bean bag mount. Stable and easy to set up.

I use velcro strips and mount my Nuvi 265 in the instrument cluster just under the speedometer in my 2004 Colorado, since the unit always shows my current speed....
Easy to remove the unit, easy to see and out of the way

Mini Cooper and Kuda...

I use the Kuda mounts in my Mini Cooper -- one for the GPS, and another for control heads for the ham radio gear.

The Kuda mounts aren't cheap -- but they integrate in with the fit and finish of the car (Mini used to use them in Europe).

The GPS mount puts my Nuvi at fingertips from the steering wheel -- I don't have to take my hand off the wheel to hit the screen. It's also easy to dress the cables to hide them from view. And most of the time, when I park the car, I just hang my hat over the Nuvi and it's hidden.

Pick what works for you! You may have to try a few different things before you find the one that works. For a while I used the suction cup on the Mini's (in)famous huge speedo. Bean bags aren't necessarily the best solution when "spirited driving" is involved.

Honda CRV Mount Option

I have a 2005 CRV. There is a flat shelf on the dashboard before the radio. I installed the Garmin mounting disc on the flat space and connect the suction mount to it. The mounted unit blocks the radio knobs and button but I pivot the unit to access the. Another option for the 2005 CRV is to install the mounting disc on the back side of the compartment door that is in the middle of the center of the dash. When not in use the disc is concealed when the door is closed. Either option works well depending on your preference.

The only thing I would be worried about is having to look down and away from the road....that is why I like it on the dash....just my opinion.....but clever non the less!

Bean Bag -

I'm with you. My bean bag can be moved from car to car with little or no effort. The bean bag is the way to go.

Bean Bag

Bean bag is the only thing that I've found that works reasonably well when you travel a lot and rent cars (and can't mount to the windshield in states like CA).

i second that. my brother introduced me to it when i got my 765t and i never use anything else since.

New mount for an '06 GMC Canyon

Ordered a replacement mount https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8556 . Scotch brand mounting tape, trimmed out with black silicone. Ran the traffic power cord through the vent to a new power outlet tapped onto the existing right side outlet. I didn't want to cut up the cord. Modified the outlet to shut off with ignition. see: http://www.355nation.net/forum/how-lighting-electrical/16390...

Garmin Beanbag...

I fell in love with it too, and from there I have bought a few more, made by another company, all very well used.

Vent Mount

I originally used a bean bag mount but it had a habit of sliding around. About a year ago, I picked up a vent mount clip and I have been using that ever since. I still have the bean-bag but I rarely use it any more.

Query

With the vent mount, does your unit get hot or cold depending on your use of heat or AC.

I have to agree about the beanbags. They are portable, hide-able and work well in every vehicle that I have driven!

Vent Mount - with springs

I like the vent mount with springs: http://www.amazon.com/IG-A03-i-Trek-Mount-Garmin-265WT/dp/B0... It never slides, is easy to install and remove. It does expose the GPS to some vent air flow, and it might not work if your air vents are very very close together. Mine works in an Accord.

Suction cupped to the passenger window

When we go on road trips we mount the GPS to the passenger window so the passenger can work the GPS and the driver and concentrate on driving. At night it's nicer because the glare from the GPS it out of your line of sight.

I'm in the process of making a custom mount for my Sky as there is no real good place to use the supplied suction mount. I'll post up a picture when I've got it completed.

Temperature

rkf wrote:

It can get warm (or cold) but I have never had it get to a temperature outside its recommended range. In fact, having it on the vent in the summertime with the AC on actually keeps it cooler. When using the bean bag and having it sit in the direct sunlight, the unit was getting quite warm.

My cool idea

My cool idea is not how I mount my nuvi but that I can mount or demount my 680 in one quick motion. It literally takes only one second to remove and another second to stash it away from prying eyes.

I use ProClip's device and vehicle mounts for my Honda Ridgeline. The 680 uses a powered cradle and its attached to the ProClip mount.

The AC power adapter is hidden thru the vent opening and attached to the fuse box (to a switchable fuse post for automatic on/off).

And because it's attached to the front of the dashboard, it's shielded from the sunlight for a very readable screen. No more squinting or futzing with the windshield mount or bean bag mount.

Here's my 265WT mounted in the instrument cluster in the 2004 Colorado, mounted with a velcro strip on the bottom of the unit. Works just fine, both navigation and traffic. And merely pull the top down and it becomes almost invisable when you leave the truck..

Stealth mount in Ford Taurus

Totally hidden mount using the "map tray" in a Ford Taurus. This compartment is about 1.5 inches deep.

http://cdn-2-service.phanfare.com/images/external/2897704_15...

Nuvi cradle was removed from the suction mount arm and mounted to a hinge at the bottom of the compartment. The cables are fished up through the underside of the dash. The Nuvi hides flat in it's cradle, but with all cables connected and ready to go.

http://cdn-2-service.phanfare.com/images/external/2897704_15...

Reach inside, swivel up the Nuvi on it's hinge and turn it on. The power and audio cables are run through the inside of the dash.

Site for mounts

I just finished the install of my TomTom One XL into my 75 Opel Sportwagon. I travel a lot to various car shows for the Opel Club and car shows in general. I first used the suction cup mount that came with the unit, but, like all suction cups, your surfaces need to be CLEAN. Well, after searching Ebay for ideas, I settled on one from a company www.arkon.com and hard mounted it to the windshield frame next to the rearview mirror, so I don't have to adjust my eyes no more than the mirror. If I knew how to post pics I would.

pro bag

I found the TomTom bean bag dashboard mount to do the trick. It is U shaped and nestles nicely into the left corner of the dash. It does not move around, although it comes with a sticky anchor which I don't use. It hides behind the registration/inspection stickers and can not be blamed for blocking ones view (possible legal issue). It is easily removed and leaves no "suck" mark on the windshield. Good, so far....
