Nuvi 1490T Question>>>

Against my better judgment, I just purchased a 1490T and I am awaiting delivery. I say against my better judgment because of the T=ads thing. Is there a way to turn off the ads unless I am using the traffic reports or will the ads be constant no matter what(hope not as I will return it if that is the case)?

TIA

Regards, Ted

But the subscription

You can pay for an traffic update plan with annual subscription. $50 a year = no more ads.
It's the only way.

Ads

You will find the ads not much of a problem.I hardly notice them on my 265wt.Mostly when you stop or slow down but again not seeing a lot of them. You can disable them but you will lose the traffic.Touch tools, settings, traffic and disable.

As long as I can shut off the ads I am okay>>>

with not having the traffic. I will use the traffic and accept the ads as needed...I just did not want the ads all the time. Thanks for clearing this up. I am still using my C530 and all this traffic stuff is new to me smile

Driving Mostly Rural Areas...

I've only seen one ad one time... (over the last two months I've had mine.)

It was only there (in very small print) when I made a pitstop and in no way interfered with the navigation.

If the unit has most of the features you want, the traffic ads are inconsequential.

Alternatively, you can use a power cord that doesn't have a traffic receiver (I'm assuming the 1490's is external like my 765T) and you won't be bothered at all.

Just finished

Just finished a 7000 mile trip with my 1490T and received only a few ads during the whole trip, probably less than 2 dozen. All they are are a very small box that appears on the screen and not something that is intrusive at all.

Certainly would never return this very bright screen with much improved sound unit just because an ad appeared on the screen when I turned it on a few times.

The ads don't appear all the time

I only see them when I stop. And even then, it is just a small line across the top. It goes away when I change screens, or start moving.

Thanks for the replies :) >>>

Just got the 1490T the other day and really like it...seems like the traffic reception is iffy at best...rarely seems to come on in my area...other than that it's a really nice unit.

In my area, traffic information is rarely correct.

My Perception...

...about traffic is that it will never be very accurate.

First, it's going to be delayed. Changes in the traffic pattern have to be reported, accumulated, someone has to decide whether the change has "met a threshold" and only then it goes on the network.

You are relying on those who relish reporting such things, their accuracy, the rate in which the reports come in, the timeliness of the reports, the speed at which the update is posted, and the latency of the report (meaning, by the time it gets to your unit, is it still accurate.)

If it weren't true, there would be radio stations providing fulltime traffic reporting during peak traffic hours... instead of once every 10-20 minutes (if that often) between songs, news, and call-in sports shows.

full-time traffic reports every couple of minutes on the radio

I do have "full-time traffic reporting" and not just "during peak traffic hours." In NYC, WINS (1010 AM) reports the traffic every ten minutes on the ones. There is a station in NJ (1130 AM or 1150 AM or close to it but I do have it set in my car) that reports the traffic on the fives and is especially good for NJ (which is my usual escape route). WCBS (880 AM) reports the traffic on the eights (except when they are broadcasting a New York Yankees baseball game). Therefore most of the time you can hear continuous traffic reports separated by only a couple of minutes at most. All you have to do is live in or near New York City.

I shall have to see how my new 1490T relates to what I hear on the radio.

Ads not the 1490T's problem

The ads almost never appear on my unit. And when they do, I've gotten accustomed to ignoring them so that they're not a distraction to me at all.

I'd worry more about whether or not the 1490Ts freeze up sporadically, or mysteriously shut down and restart on their own, or that the finger swipe (similar to iPhone's gesture) ever works.

Then By All Means, Rely On The Radio Reports!!

grin Almost makes me want to live in NYC. wink wink

I won't quibble... as I did say, once every ten to twnety minutes, but the point being... if you have it, use it. I'll bet it is far more accurate than the version we get on the gps units because there are fewer "steps" to getting it to you on the radio than on the gps unit.
