Red Light Camera Beta

I downloaded the red light camera beta file. It is the "frosting on the cake" of the standard POI and I hope it quickly becomes the norm. The intersection name rather than the standard alert greatly improves the function.

We are evaluating a new publishing tool from Garmin that will allow us to set directional alerts in the camera files.

Over the last few weeks we have been gathering approach vectors for all of our locations. We may need assistance in the future for locations where the camera equipment does not show up in the Google map St view yet.

Miss POI

That certainly makes sense, but isn't that going to make maintaining the file a lot more difficult and time consuming?

A couple weeks ago when I was down in the Naples area of FL, I found 2 red light cameras that were only pointed eastbound. All well and good. As I drove through the intersections several more times over the next couple of weeks, I realized that at one of the intersections, they were installing a camera pole looking westbound.

Won't changes and additions like this be hard to make in a timely manner?

Gary
wouldn't that fall on the folks that live in the Naples, Ft. Meyers area to make the report of added or new cameras? I know I added a camera different direction in the same intersection myself in my area. Or through reports as they are done now.

The updates can probably

The updates can probably only be made by the local users but it might require an increased awareness for a while, first to report directional information, and a continuing awareness that just because the database reflects a directional camera at an intersection that doesn't mean an additional one can't be added in the other direction at any time.

In general I think directional awareness will be useful as most of the ones I come across are unidirectional and it can be annoying to hear the warning when I know it's not valid for the direction of travel. Once they're all directional you'll know that if you hear the warning then it applies. Even more applicable to speed cameras as I think it's more common to run a little over the limit than to run reds.

Gravey

Your right the beta one is much better..
Now all we need is exact locations voiced out for the speed cameras..

Garmin gpx and other GPS formats

Each week after downloading the Beta files, I add an "@" in front of each speed camera number so the Garmin will recognize the speed to which my speed should be compared for an alert. If I traveled through Canada, I'd also convert the @nn KM/H to @nn MPH, as the Garmin does not understand a mixed POI file of both MPH and KPH. I store both as gpx files so I can open them in MapSource.

While I would see these changes as a positive change, I don't know the significance to other GPS brands.

RLC Directional Alerts

Yes and that is exactly my concern. If the intersection I mentioned above only alerted in the eastbound direction and the new westbound cameras were not added to the file in a timely manner then that's a problem.

To err on the side of caution, I would prefer to be alerted when I approach the intersection from any direction.

We can't guarantee that we have members living in all RLC areas to provide the reporting in a timely manner. In this situation, I don't live anywhere close to N. Naples. I just happened to be in the area and emailed Miss POI when I saw the cameras and didn't get an alert. She added them the very next update. But these 2 eastbound cameras had been operational for quite some time and were missed, perhaps because no POI-Factory member lives in the area. The one westbound camera will be new.

Maybe Miss POI has other information sources so that she can find out these types of changes quickly - I don't know.

You're both right. The page with the link to click has the "w/ streets" text but the actual file downloaded is still "beta"...for today and yesterday at least wink

I noticed that too during the download part.Wanted to post the name as it shows so anyone looking for the download would know the correct name for it.

Suggestion for Miss POI

the beta is what most people use, I think there is no need for the standard. Also I will be willing to get RLC directions in the ATL GA Area.

yup

We will eventually be phasing out the standard.

"Beta"

I agree. I would never had downloaded the "beta" until I had read the posts. Actually, I didn't know that the update existed until this thread appeared.

I compared the two (beta and non beta) csv files and didn't see any differences as far as coordinates are concerned so I decided to use beta csv. I've been using the beta since last summer. Works great.

The beta file rocks.

I concur1

I really like the beta, specifically because of the names. Renaming it to something other than 'beta' might help others, because at first I didn't understand if it was simply a test file ... or a next generation file, which it certainly is!

I like double beta

I actually put two copies of the beta file on my nuvi...just named slightly differently. I get double the warnings...but more importantly I get double display of the street names...many times I cannot look at the unit on the first warning to confirm the streets.

I have Karen and Emily sound warnings for the two beta files.

I find using Australian and English accents works great to differentiate the warnings from radio and other background noise.

Beta rules....not matter what is is called.

Update

This great.

love the red light camera file

I love the red light camera beta file with the street names. The only problem that I find is that when I am on a highway with no lights (on the Cross Bronx Expressway this weekend), the red light alert keeps going off. Is there anyway to fix this?

Yup in the works

We are working on adding approach vectors so that you won't get alerts on nearby roads.

Miss POI

Approach vectors sounds

Approach vectors sounds really cool.
I've only got a few in my area where I've got cross streets close enough to trigger the RLC alert, but have it at a different light.

Beta?

The posts indicate that the "beta" is the cat's meow. But where is the Beta?

The current Red Light and Speed csv files have no intersection info in them.

Do you need to have both "Red Light" and "Speed" csv files in order to account for all cameras in an area?

Are there duplicates between Red Light and Speed?

(living in a perpetual state of confusion)

Miss POI

The Cross Bronx Expressway is a depressed interstate highway with no shoulder and brick walls on both sides and parallel service roads above. About every quarter mile to half mile is a bridge over the highway and intersections with the service roads, and they have red light cameras which are within 50 feet of all the highway lanes. While approach vectors is a big improvement in the RLC file, they may not help this problem. One way to minimize it but not stop it, is to shorten the alert distance. If POI Loader is used automatically, the alert distance is 1320 feet, and you will get contant alerts over the entire length of the Cross Bronx. I run POI Loader in manual and enter 500 feet for city streets with 25 mph speed limit. I still get alerts on the Cross Bronx, but not constantly.

dobs108

Prefer Od Style

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer just seeing "Red Light Camera" vs it trying to cram the on-coming street name in with the alert. Maybe its due to the street names being a little longer around here.

Beta definately is the way

Beta definately is the way to go...

Very helpful

False speed alerts

I recently began to get 5 mph false speed alerts in two locations 30 miles from each other. According to the speed file, the nearest camera is over 90 miles from my false locations. I have 2 265WTs doing it with the latest firmware. I update the speed and red light files each week. This problem only recently started.

WongFeiHung wrote:

the street names can be hard to read but it helps to know what intersection has the camera.

False Speed Alerts

View these locations on the map by uploading from the GPS to the PC in MapSource or another POI program. The related data will also be displayed. If you are sure it is bogus, delete these POIs and download to the GPS. If the wrong data came from the speed camera file, report the correct info to Miss POI.

Many other POI Factory contributors know a lot more about this than I do!

Woodstock_Woody wrote:

I suspect you have loaded a POI file (not the speed alert file, but some other file) that has a "5" in the name. POI Loader will interpret this as an implicit speed alert. Rename the file to something with no numbers in it and re-run POI Loader.

New Camera Files

Great Work Everybody!!

This is definitely "crowdsourcing" at its finest!

Red Light Camera Beta

Couple things.

Surely the mp3 files are compatible with the beta, right? I've tried loading with POI loader twice now but only get beeps, no mp3 when approaching a red light camera. Doing a little clean up tonight and will try again. Yes. The files all have the same file name (with differing extensions).

Also, I seem to have found an intersection here listed as Red Light where I can see no cameras at any corner. Am I missing something or should I report this for removal from the file?

BETA

great idea

Red Light Camera File and MP3s

The red light camera file is compatible with .mp3 and .wav files. Not all GPS units can play .mp3 files. I don't know every unit, but the Garmin nuvi 2xx cannot, and the 7xx can. If your unit can't use .mp3 files, then just use .wav files. Most sounds are available in both for download. Many POI Factory contributors know a lot more about this than me, so what unit do you have?

If you have an intersection with no red light camera that is in the RLC file, then report it to Miss POI using the "report an enforcement camera" link on the top right of this page. Study the different pictures of red light cameras. In my area, Nassau County NY, they are usually 50 to 60 feet away from the intersection and look at the back of your car when you enter the intersection. They can be on the right side of the road or on a center island.

Be aware that many intersections do not have cameras on all sides - some have only one location leaving all the other streets uncovered. Sometimes two streets cross each other at more than one location, possibly miles apart, and cameras might be at one intersection and not the other.

Keeping the RLC file updated is very important work from individual contributors like you. Finding where a camera isn't is just as important as finding where one is. What area are you in?
