Red Light Camera Beta

I downloaded the red light camera beta file. It is the "frosting on the cake" of the standard POI and I hope it quickly becomes the norm. The intersection name rather than the standard alert greatly improves the function.

I started using the "beta"

I started using the "beta" file several weeks back. I find it more useful as I can see the street names and I know what intersection a particular POI is referring to. I will be downloading the beta file from now on.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Not Aware of It

Although posts have been made by other members and Miss POI, (that is how I became aware of it) most of the subscribers may not be aware that the beta file is an option and its benefits. The simple solution is to make the beta file the only red light camera file.

Beta Is Better

Used the standard at first but switched to the beta - much better. The street names are a great help.

I also use the beta file

I too use the beta file. To me the street names are better, as I travel for my new job and one thing I do not need is tickets. It gets my vote to be the published standard.

It would be interesting to

I use the beta, But then I can!

It genius on Maryann and Jon's part to use the beta as a carrot to get people to contribute. No windmill no beta even for those that paid their way in.

Don't have a WindMill and you can't get the beta file?

You automatically become an active member and get a windmill when you've made posts in at least 3 of the last 5 weeks. Activity includes uploading POI files and/or posting in the discussion forums.

Windmill

Some folks aren't talkers, and choose to support the site with hard cash. Which, in this economy, isn't necessarily the easiest thing to do.

But TPTB put more value in posts, regardless of content.

So I will play the game, I guess.

Will Try

After reading all the post, I'm on my way to download the Beta version and try it.

--
Nuvi 750 and 755T

I've been meaning to try it.

I've thought about trying out the beta file but have not yet. I tend to go for a while between file updates since the gps lives in the car almost exclusively. This thread has motivated me to finally try it out.

How to select direction from POI

I've searched and haven't found the answer. At many intersection in MD most red light and right turn cameras are only on one side of the road. So if you are headed the other 3 ways, there's no need to be warned. I realize GPS has a 40 foot or so fudge factor but it knows which direction and which street you are on. Example: Moravia and Sinclair intersection.
Only if you are South bound in Sinclair could you be ticketed by the camera. Nothing on Moravia either way and nothing on North bound Sinclair Lane. Is there coding that can be added to the poi to enhance this?

Moravia Rd & Sinclair Ln, Baltimore, MD 21206
Link:

Selecting Direction Isn't An Option

This has been covered for other types of POI's (Rest Areas is the one that comes to mind). The GPS only warns you of your distance or speed. The theory is probably that it's better to be warned when you may not need it than to miss a warning when you DO need it. I'm sounding like I think I'm an authority on this, and I'm certainly not. But I've seen several posts asking about this in the past and the answer is always, "Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's what we have."
My personal preference is to be warned before I reach the posted signs. Then I can prepare to stop if the car in front of me stops short.

POI Factory is on it;)

We are evaluating a new publishing tool from Garmin that will allow us to set directional alerts in the camera files.

Over the last few weeks we have been gathering approach vectors for all of our locations. We may need assistance in the future for locations where the camera equipment does not show up in the Google map St view yet.

Miss POI

I will be giving it a try.

Google Maps Links

I tried copying the google maps link in my question.
It only shows up as the word link:
Are we not allowed to post these kids of links. It shows the actual intersection and the one camera.

Yowser!

Beta?

Glad I ran across this thread, since I didn't know there was a beta! I will download and try it out on my trip next week. Thanks for the tip.

The directional vectors sound like a good idea; it's annoying to get the red light camera alerts when driving in Chicago on the freeway, crossing over the streets that have RLC.

thanks for the tip

downloading red light beta

I just downloaded the beta to my computer. Now I want to put it on my Nuvi. Do I delete the old red camera file first? Thanks.

Yes

Yes, delete the old red light POI file on your computer. Don't worry about the GPS because each time you load POIs using POILoader, your old POI data on the GPS is replaced as long as you're not doing anything semi-exotic with the file structure on your GPS.

Note that if you have a custom icon or sound alert to go along with what was your old Redlight POIs that you'll need to rename the csv, bmp and mp3/wav to be the same when using the beta.csv.

The zip file with the beta also has speed cameras and the regular redlight camera files. Delete the regular redlight file, too, or the redlight and beta will give you double alerts.

Problem

The only problem I have with the street name is that it is not displayed at the very top in the green bar. Its just in a little black box that comes up.
885T On my 660 the green would turn red to alert me.

thank you.

Thanks so much. I didn't know the beta included the speed cameras as well. I would have had double beeps and not known why. Also, about renaming the alert and icon files.

thank you.

Whoops. if you're thanking me, I think we have a misunderstanding. The beta redlight POI file does not contain the speed camera POIs as far as I know.

So when downloading the zip file with the beta and extracting the three files, you can delete either the beta or redlight camera (obviously, most of us suggest deleting the redlight and using the beta) but you need to keep the speedcamera POI file along with one of the redlight files assuming that you want speed camera and redlight camera alerts.

If you were thanking someone else, then ... nevermind.

That certainly makes sense, but isn't that going to make maintaining the file a lot more difficult and time consuming?

A couple weeks ago when I was down in the Naples area of FL, I found 2 red light cameras that were only pointed eastbound. All well and good. As I drove through the intersections several more times over the next couple of weeks, I realized that at one of the intersections, they were installing a camera pole looking westbound.

Won't changes and additions like this be hard to make in a timely manner?

Update

frenchhorwitz wrote:

An update: It appears that the Redlight, beta and speed cameras now can be downloaded individually and that the three aren't downloaded as a three-file zip archive that needs to be extracted. All in all, that does simplify things a bit as there's no longer a need to extract the files nor is there a need to delete one of the two downloaded redlight camera files.

Also, the current beta file is now identified as:

Red Light Cameras w/ Streets Names 2010-03-24

while the current "old" Redlight POI file is called:

Red Light Cameras 2010-03-24

@CraigW

Nice change to the download now. This will clear up some of the confusion to new members.Plus cut out some extra steps. Now if we could get them to show up in My Favorite files.

It's a great idea of splitting files individually instead of a zip file. Because you can download what you want only.
