I just found a wonderful site with tons of public domain books in MP3 format. LibriVox free audio books seems to have a massive selection. Hunting for your interests is likely best done by going to the genre classifications rather than a wide open browse.
Catalog Index/More Search Options/Choose by Genre/ presents a list of reading from Adventures to Westerns.

I have downloaded a couple, unzipped them and put them on the SD card in my Nuvi 780. They play well...the files are a bit on the huge size, but wow, what a great resource.
Audio Books
Thanks for the link. You might also try the newsgroups. I have found quite a few good books on:
alt.binaries.mp3.audiobooks
or
alt.binaries.mp3.audiobooks.highspeed
I have downloaded a few but I find most of my audio books at the public library. There are several good free programs to rip CDs to mp3 files.
