Anyone know if you can down load an older version of a map from Garmin?

In the world according to me (in my own little GPS world), the update of 2010 ver 4 is riddled with errors. I wish I had never moved from ver. 2 that came with the original Nuvi 1690. I made the mistake of thinking that a newer version of the map update would eliminate mistakes and not create them... I know...silly me. I used my one 'freebie' update when I went to ver 4 and regret it.
Anyone have a similar experience and does anyone know if Garmin will allow either the next update (Ver5) or allow me to return to Ver 2? I can guess that v5 is probably a no-go gratis, but how about v2?
Previous Map Versions
If you mean 2010.20 vs the current 2010.40 maps, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure Garmin removes the older version from their website when they release a new version.
You might find users here that have burned previous versions to a DVD like I did. I have all 4 of the 2010.XX maps on DVD. Someone may be able to upload it to a server so you can download it. I would, but I don't have access to 2GB of server space to host it.

.
This is another reason why it is STRONGLY recommended to make and KEEP at complete backup of the unit before doing any updating.
Upload Service
I don't have version 2010.20 as I upgraded my 2009 to 2010.40 via Garmin's lifetime maps.
But one of many sites to upload and download large files would be megaupload.com
and
rapidshare.com

I agree with all that say
I agree with all that say that I should have backed up ver 2 prior to downloading v 4..
HOWEVER....am I wrong in asking that Garmin/Mapsource do a better job with corrections? They ADDED errors that weren't there prior. Why should I waste 2-3 gb on my computer on outdated maps?...
I know...for situations like this

No, you're not wrong in asking. The reality of the situation however, shows that it is, the way it is with Navteq.
I would strongly recommend that you not hold your breath waiting for a map that meets your expectations. You will turn blue and pass out.
I know its frustrating, but its the best we have available to us, until Navteq improves.

Most are not NAVTEQ's problem
As frustrating as it is
It really depends on the error, missing streets are a Navteq problem, most others are Garmin's problem with what they do with data delivered and their mapping algorithms also map manipulation. Also remember that even though improved with NUMaps the data is still 3 quarters behind NAVTEQ's newest maps, do to Garmin's manipulation of the data and the time it takes them to deliver the maps to us.
The POI Data base sucks it's very stale and is NAVTEQ's problem completely.

Can't just copy maps
You might find users here that have burned previous versions to a DVD like I did. I have all 4 of the 2010.XX maps on DVD. Someone may be able to upload it to a server so you can download it. I would, but I don't have access to 2GB of server space to host it.
Even if he got the file, it wouldn't work as maps are tied to an individual GPS unit. Either it wouldn't show at all or he'd get a "map cannot be unlocked" message.
Correct

Correct. But if he has, or buys, the lifetime update then he can install any version of the map, not just the current one.

2010.4
I just downloaded 2010.4 to my 765T last night. However, I still have the downloaded copy of 2010.3 on my hard drive. I think there is some information on this site regarding storing 2 versions of the maps on your GPS. I think one could be on the unit itself and the other on the SD card. I think I'll do that so I can switch maps if the current version turns out to be as bad as some of you say it is.
Gary A
Gary A, you are right as long as the older maps come from HIS lifetime subscription, if he'd made backups. Just because he has a lifetime subscription does not mean he can use maps from other lifetime subscribers. I could send him 2010.20 from my backups, but I'm pretty darned sure it wouldn't work on his GPS since those are tied/locked to mine.
Map on SD card

I've wondered about this myself. Does anyone know if the map directions, screen update or GPS overall would run slower if the selected map in use were on the SD card vice internal memory?
Scary stuff!
I am surprise that you have found mistakes on the map. Does anyone else have the same problem?
Cheers
Frustration

I'll second that. I had a less than pleasant experience trying to get the free guaranteed map update from Garmin. I'm still running Windows 2000 on my primary machine and their site wanted me to run the WebUpdater software to register and determine if a map update was available.
When I tried to run the WebUpdater the first time, it told me that the current version didn't work on my operating system, and that they were working on the problem. I figured since they were addressing the problem, I wouldn't have to worry. I had also put my serial number and other info in on their website and figured I was registered but I think that was asking me to connect the unit as well to finalize the registration.
More recently, I noticed they had a new version of the WebUpdater software and decided to try it again. This time it told me my OS was unsupported. So much for "working on the problem". I took a look at my account to verify that the GPS had been registered previously (shame on me for not verifying that initially) and nothing was listed. At that point I contacted support to find out how to proceed in getting my map update.
Well, basically they told me that I did not qualify for an update if it had been more than 60 days since the unit was purchased, despite the fact that problems with their software/registration process had caused the delay. I went back and forth with them a couple of times before deciding it wasn't worth my time, so I just grabbed the new map they owed me via an "alternate" method.
It's a shame I had to resort to this. I would have been more than happy to provide proof of purchase so that they could determine which version of the map I was entitled to, but they were unwilling, too lazy, whatever. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on Garmin's support, so perhaps I just got one of the bad apples. Escalating the issue to a supervisor might have gotten them to do the right thing but then again it might have just wasted more of my time.
On the bright side, the new 2010.40 map works great for me. It fixed a number of problems around this area that the original map had. It appears that they manage to fix some areas while breaking others with every update.

older version
I can only 'assume" that you are using a M-S Windows computer. I can again "assume" that you regularly user the SYSTEM TOOLS and have created RESTORE points...
With this in mind, you may be able to "RESTORE" your system to a date prior to your addition of .40
Same Map File

The map file downloaded from garmin is the same file for all of us. What makes it different is the Product Key used when trying to install to the Garmin. If you sent me your 2010.20 downloaded file, I could install it on my Garmin using my Product Key.

Gary A, I see what you're
Gary A, I see what you're saying now. I'm talking about the straight up "gmapprom.img" file that gets copied into the Garmin directory during install. I don't think you can just copy/paste that file into the Garmin folder of another Nuvi and have it work. That would be too easy.
Oh, No

That you cannot do, it won't work. It has to be the executable map file as downloaded from the Garmin website AND you still would have to have your own valid Product Key.
That is the file I backup to DVD (won't fit on a CD) each time I download an update. I have the downloaded 2010.10, 2010.20, 2010.30 & 2010.40 files all on DVD so I could go backwards if I wanted to because I have valid Product Keys for each version when I bought the Lifetime Update. Each Product Key is displayed on the MyMaps web page when I log into MyGarmin.

Interesting. I just keep
Interesting. I just keep the "gmapprom.img" files in my backups. Since they are all my updates, I can simply copy an older version into the Garmin folder over the current file and just restart the GPS. No need to wait or install anything at all. I know it works because I've tried it.

That works as a backup for your own unit only. I also backup my whole 660 which includes the gmapprom.img file.
In his opening post, the OP of this topic, detailer201, was asking about getting a copy of the 2010.20 map from Garmin due to problems he is experiencing with 2010.40. When Garmin posts a new map for download, previous versions are no longer available for download.

We were giving him options for getting a copy of version 2010.20 from another source.
