For some things they can be very helpful; for others, worthless. You won't know if you don't try.

Does the 1412 have it's maps ONLY on the SD card ?
Maybe there is still an old version built-in that you could select ??

Has your son's behind met your foot yet?? shock

Unformat

I've never tried this, but I see that a Google search pulls up a lot of ways to unformat a SD card. If you don't have a backup, trying one of the unformat programs might be worth a try if you have no luck Magellan's tech support.

Here's some info:

http://www.easeus.com/resource/unformat-memory-card.htm

And once you're back up and running, back up your GPS files to a computer hard drive or recordable DVD...for next time.

Recuva

It may save your cookies as long as you didn't write to the card again!

Rebuild image

Can the image not be rebuilt again, then add maps.
There is no way to get it back.
I think if I had the factory firmware I could build it from there.

Any thoughts and thanks for the replies.

What exactly got formatted ??

Well now this sounds a little different.

I first thought that it was just an SD card that got formatted......now it sounds like it was the internal memory for the whole GPS.

If it was the main memory, you are screwed because the base operating system has been wiped out and you have no way to communicate with the device any more.
The common term for this is "bricked".....because you now have an expensive paper weight.

This story should give pause to anybody tempted to "hack" their GPS.

Formatted Internal Memory

FYI, I formatted my MM 3200 at least 3 times and I've never had problems seeing the unit and copying the backup files from PC back to the unit.
Don't ask me why did I have to format my GPS smile

No Hack

I can see the unit, Load 3.12 to it. I just need maps.
It has the Tfat partition as well. Just need the right sd software.
You should read alittle more to what im saying.
The sd is wiped not the unit.
Not that I give a crap about the device, I like resolving issues like this though, not giving up like you mr brick.
Let this be a lesson to you , read before you shoot your mouth off.

Chill......

I am trying to help.

Maybe it is YOU who needs to be more precise with the terminology you use. I (we) are not mind readers.

The map itself is not considered "firmware".
It appears that you have all of the "firmware" that you need.

Good luck. I will not "shoot off my mouth" in your direction again.

No SD card.

My 1412 did not come with an SD card. it has a reader that has a black piece of plastic over it but thats it. a card is recognized by it. any idea why mine dont have a card (i still have maps and POIs and stuff)

SD card

Very few new units come with a card (any brand).

The card is really not needed for normal operation.......except.....that Magellan recently started supplying their new maps on SD cards.

If you get a new map like that, they you would have to leave the card IN to have access to the new map.

There are 2 versions of the 1412. Both have SD card slots located behind the glued on plastic tab on the bottom.

The early ones had a small internal memory so the maps were located on a 2GB SD card. These units will not work without a map card.

Later units had a larger internal memory which contained the maps. They did not come with a SD card, but could accept one. The latest software does not look for the card and works with either version.
