Has anyone seen this problem with POI files downloaded to GPS ?

I recently purchased an SD card for my Garmin 255W and have taken the time to download a number of POI files from this web site. I was really proud of the work I did until I tested the files on my GPS. I entered a destination and then selected that I wanted to search for POI's along "My Current Route". I then went to Extras and selected my "Custom POI's".

The files that I had downloaded (e.g. Wendys_USA_Canada)initially displayed correctly, with the description, distance from my starting point, and direction. When I chose the down arrow to see the next page of POI's that are farther from my starting point, I found that the description from the initial page stayed the same as it was initially displayed (including the city), while the distance and directions changed. When I selected some of these "incorrect" description locations, the description on the "GO" screen now shows the correct description (including the correct city) and when I choos "More", the correct address is displayed.

This is true of ALL of my POI files that I downloaded and installed on the SD card. When I select POI's from the built in factory list, the display is correct and it changes description everytime I go to the "next" page.

Has anyone ever seen this problem before, and if so what did you do to correct it? I can't begin to think of what to type to do a forum search for this problem so I am starting a new topic.

HELP PLEASE . . . . .

POI Discription Issue

It sounds like you may have a firmware issue.

Try loading them on the unit instead of the SD card and see if the description issue changes.

Have you tried contacting Garmin?

Good News - It now works

JRoz - Thanks for your feed back. Based on what you said, I decided to try one more experiment. I deleted all of the POI files from the SD card (which I had originally loaded using the "Express" method) and then reloaded them using the "Manual" method. They now work correctly. When I go to the next page, the locations listed contain the correct description.

I don't know what solved the problem - either deleting & reloading, or loading them as "Manual" vs "Express" . . . . but regardless, they now display correctly.

Again, thanks for the feedback. It got me thinking to try something else. I'm now ready to start adding a lot more POI's to my SD card.

I spoke to soon. More info on problem

I spoke to soon. When I tested the reloaded POI files, I found that the next screen displays the correct descriptions if the Search Near was either "Where I am Now", "A Different City", or "My Destination". If I select, however, "My Current Route", the descriptions for the Custom POI's don't change from one page to the next. The distances and directions do change and reflect the actual POI.

Can someone test this on their GPS (mine is a Garmin 255W if that makes a difference) and let me know if their POI files work correctly? I'd like to know if it is just my GPS or if it is representative of the way the Garmin Nuvi's work.

This is a known bug

This is a known bug that affects multiple units. My 760 does this, too. It has been reported here for quite some time, but has not yet been fixed by Garmin.

Thanks for the info. After

Thanks for the info.

After looking at all of the POI's that were available from this web site, I thought I would buy an SD card and make use of the hard work that a lot of people have done in creating the POI's. Unfortunately, since I wanted to easily see what places were ahead on my route, I see that the info will be of limited value. With the description "locked" from the first page, I might know that something is coming up but have to do some button pushing to find out what it is. That might be as bad as "Texting" on a cell phone. Keep up the work anyway, I enjoy seeing what people come up with for POI's.

If you have some custom pois

If you have some custom pois you want to know when they are coming up.Why not just set a alert? You can use wav files for your unit and have voice message.Or use a wav file with no sound and it will show up on the screen.Of course you still have to do some finger pushing to select the go to.I put in a suggestion that once a alert comes up to be able to just touch the alert message on screen for go to.

I know that I could set

I know that I could set proximity alerts for POIs, I've done that with Rest Areas so I can begin to think in advance whether I need to REST or not, but I don't really want to be alerted every time I'm passing a Wendy's or Burger King. I'd just like to look at the screen and determine if there are any within say the next 60 miles up the road when it may be time to eat.

I thought having the ability to scroll through, looking at the distances along my route, would give me the ability to plan a stop. I know I could enter in a "different location" but usually you don't know the small city names along the interstate - especially one that might be 60 miles ahead.

Has anyone got another solution????????
