Road Trip

Wifey and I are headed out at the end of the month (from Houston) on a 7 day road trip with no set plans other than taking her to Carlsbad Caverns. Was wondering what there is to see in the mid to eastern half of NM.

Was somewhat planning on making a loop from Houston -> San Antonio ->Carlsbad NM -> Santa Fe NM ->Amarillo TX ->Abeline ->Houston.

Might entertain going across to Arizona.

Whole thing is kinda wide open as our plans change at the drop of a hat, 2 weeks ago we headed to the Casinos in La. and ended up eating Gumbo in New Orleans that afternoon and taking in Bourbon St. Then ate breakfast in Memphis. Dinner in Fayetteville Ark.

We usually just get on the road and go wherever the mood strikes.

I'd check the state web sites. They often have some great venues that cane be a little off the beaten track but well worth the effort to find.

We do a lot of day trips or overnighters on the weekends. Check out the visitor centers as you enter a state. The staff are very knowledgeable and can give some great suggestions. A lot of states publish tour books and maps of scenic routes as well. Hey, it's your tax dollars supporting this so get some return on those taxes.

New Mexico

In Santa Fe, visit the Palace of the Governors where the local Pueblo people display their jewelry & crafts. Also visit the Chapel Loretto and see the free-standing spiral staircase & the legend about it. I buy my Chili powder at the shop on Water Street when we go there. One year we took the tour by pedicab & enjoyed the history as told by the "pedaler"

There is a very nice (twisty) driing road on the eastern side of AZ, route 191 from Clifton to Springerville.

There is the Meteor Crater‎ new Winslow.

Also the Heart Attack Grill in Chandler.

I would definitely agree...

with the www.roadsideamerica.com site that is. Of course, the fact that they included a few of my suggestions might make me a bit biased! (like the "premanufactured ghost town" just East of Brenham, TX)

More importantly, I think that if you're planning on hitting Amarillo on your way through, you've got Route 66 icons, like the Cadillac Ranch, The Big Texan, and others that may be just short side trips from them.

Best wishes for an enjoyable trip! Would love to hear how it went when you're done!
