Deal of the Day, Today March 8th (Garmin 765t)

Perhaps it's time to upgrade to a better model.

I don't know if garmin has a "better" model. I went from a 765t to a 1490t and the quality is not the same. I have owned Garmin's for years and their quality control has slipped. I can still say that they have the best overall units compared to what you can do with the likes of tomtom and magellans.

Got mine at Newegg for $169 last week...

Refurbs @ 169/179 are pretty common.

Still, not a bad price for a decent model. However,I do agree with you. Garmin has certainly let the bar slip down from the 6XX units of a couple years ago. I do feel that they are still the best out there, and just picked up a Nuvifone on Saturday. So far, I love it.

To be fair, the Costco deal includes Lifetime maps in their price.

I closed my eye's to the few bad reviews on amazon and clicked buy. We'll see how it goes. Should be an upgrade over my Nuvi 350something which didn't help much in traffic and was hell in negotiating 12 lane freeways diverging/turns at 70mph...

I've owned most of Garmins

I've owned most of Garmins models and the 765t is a good unit. Less problmatic than my current 855t and 1490t. None of their models are perfect but I rather have a Garmin than any other brand.

I agree with you.

I agree with you.

No Garmin model is perfect

Every Garmin model has its issues. Some 765T owners complain about the touch screen having imputing issues even after calibrating the screen. Other people complain about the Bluetooth not being loud enough.

I have had issues with my 1490T, too, but with firmware upgrades, I am seeing fewer screen freezes and reboots for no apparent reason. IMO, the FM TMC traffic is about worthless. Seldom are the reported delays of significance. I have been stuck with delays that have never been reported. Still, I love its beautiful big screen and loud clear TTS. I only hope Garmin comes out with a 5 in GPS with NuLink. While even the people with 1690s complain about problems, I think their are fewer complaints regarding meaningless traffic alerts.

Sticking with old faithful

I've often considered the 765 for the few updated features over my nüvi 760 but I'm happy with my unit. It works well and has never let me down. I plan to stick with it for as long as it works. I can't really imagine what new features they could add that would be compelling enough to make me change.

Thats a good deal, thanks.

I also have the 760, and don't really have a reason to upgrade to the 765t. Maybe when the prices for one of those with a nulink come down...

Costco

As mentioned above costco's offer includes lifetime map upgrades and you can't beat the return policy. Also deal is good for a month (not just today), so if you don't make up your mind today you still have time

Thanks, Costco here I come!

Smart Lane Assist

The Smart Lane Assist in the new units makes them worthwhile. Since I bought my Garmin, replacing a Mio unit (can't buy to many Mio’s in the US anymore) The smart lane assist has come on every time I needed it and has prevented me from causing multicar accidents trying to get over in time, I know in enough time now where I need to be for the next maneuver on big highways.

Don't be too happy with Costco's return policy. They have started to refuse returns and eliminate members who over use their pplicy.

A GPS can take you where You want to go but never where you WANT to be.

Oh really?

I have yet to be refused any return by Cosco. I had to return three (3) 1490T's to Costco before I got one that didn't have a problem. They were very appologetic and courteous. Sure, they have limitations on their return policy with regard to certain electronics, such as computers, MP3 players. But they specifically give you written information at the point of sale if there is a limitation to particular products return.

I find it hard to believe that Costco would eliminate your membership just because you returned products, too often. When a product is defective, you have good reason to return it. The more you buy, the more likely you are going to be returning.

Still, I could imagine situations where someone could abuse his privilege. For example, if someone returned multiple perfectly functioning HD TV's just because he couldn't find one he liked enough to keep. At some point, Costco would have to say, enough of this.

Is a TomTom XL 340-S for $118.54 a good deal?

That's what's at Amazon.com today.
