What does Mapsource do vs base maps

Hi, I am a little confused. I loaded Mapsource onto my PC and I am not really sure why I would want to send a map to my device. Does that override the base map? I may be overanalyzing this but I am not sure if someone could summarize why I would use that and load in a map like Baltimore MD or somewhere.

Thanks

Use of MapSource

It's easier and much quicker to plan a route on your computer than on the gps unit. You don't really send a map to the gps, you send a route.

That may clarify things, so

That may clarify things, so I have a Nuvi 255W, I don't think it will accept routes from what I read on other posts.

Correct 255 will not do

Correct 255 will not do routes. Can use the via method.

waypoints

I use mapsource to manage my waypoints that I've stored. Since I have an 855, I also manage, store, upload/download custom routes.

It will not overwrite base map. The mapset comes with the unit will not be overwritten as the name is ends with rom.img However, if you ever upgrade the map, then the next send will most likely overwritten the previous one.
