Is it possible to have owner info on an initial Garmin screen?

Garmin nuvi 765T

Is it possible to put owner information on an initial screen - like on Blackberry, iPAQ, and other phones and PDA's?

Perhaps reprogram the initial warning to show owner info instead of telling you not to touch while driving every time you turn it on?

assign the startup screen...

you can create a custom screen with that info on your computer, save it as a jpg (I think that's the form) and assign that jpg image as your startup screen. I don't think you can bypass the warning screen (easily).

You can not delete the warning screen. You can replace the Splash screen with an image, which can be a document that you have scanned into your computer as an image.. Obviously the document would have name etc. The size of the image is important so backup the current splash screen open an editor and determine the size. Search this site for threads on replacing your search. I have found it here and changed my screen to a family picture.

In The 200 Nuvi You Can...

I'm not familiar with the 765T, but in the 2xx nuvis you can select a particular image from your picture viewer to show as a start-up image. Go to "Tools" then "Picture Viewer", then touch the picture you want. Touch "Info" under the picture, then touch the little box next to "Display at power on?"

So to make your custom splash screen... Create a 480 pixel by 232 pixel image in PhotoShop (or similar image software). Put your "This nuvi belongs to [whoever]" words on that image. Save it as a JPG with a name like mynuvi.jpg or whatever. Then load it into the GPS in the Garmin\JPEG folder. Start the GPS, select that image as the start-up image, restart the GPS and... voila!

Easy

Try the link above or use any jpg picture and TEXT in Your info by using a text editor such as Paint...

For Example: You could save and use one of the images from this link (I DID) and use paint to type in your info... put image on your device and use it as your start-up screen.

One of many ways...

I took a close, well lit, photo of my business card (back when I was employed), downloaded that to the Nuvi, and assigned that photo as the "splash screen".

It appears briefly at each start-up.

Actually it is possible. Turbo CCC (famous for his helpful voice hacking and other GPS programs) changed the warning screen from the 'don't operate while driving' that we're familiar with to show his name and address so a finder could return the unit. Here's how he did it:

"Simply edit your "language.gtt" in the Garmin/Text directory with a text editor and search for the following line: TXT_Warning_body_STR_M The next line will contain the warning text enclosed between and ."

You just change that warning text to whatever you want. As always, be sure to back up the file before tinkering with it.

Cheers wink

My Screen

My startup screen states that the unit is locked with the Garmin PIN and is only usable by the owner. It also gives my StuffBack ID and the contact info for StuffBack and states that there is a no-questions-asked reward for return of the unit through StuffBack.

Darn the luck. I don't think there is a .gtt file for American English in the 205W. I guess you can change the warning screen on some units, and in all the other languages on the 205W, but the one I use seems to be the system default and looks like it can't be modified.

@GeeMack: You could change

@GeeMack: I think you could change the setting to British English and use that .gtt file. I like that voice better anyway.

Different extension

It looks like Garmin changed format of the file. It isn't .gtt any more. Now is a .glx file. I found all of the above described in the file named en_GB.glx. It can be opened and edited using notepad. It's quite big file and you have to scroll toward the bottom third.

Thanks everyone

I have concluded I need to modify text and the splash screen, so it works with or without security enabled.

The info provided by various folks has given me the processes I need to do this, so THANKS!!!

i can't find the default text file

I can find the text as demonstrated in your post in, for example, the British_English.gtt text file, but I can't find the default text file (which I assume is American_English).

I have looked through all the Garmin folders and inspected every txt based file I could find, but I could not find the warning text in any of them.

I would rather not change the language to use the British_English, so does any one know where this text resides?

(Splash Screen works Great!)

Here

Garmin/Text/en_GB.glx
Open the file using a text editor (Notepad or similar). Scroll toward the bottom of the page and follow instructions:

hercegovac -thanks but ...

I cannot find any glx files on the 765T.

I took a chance and changed the text in the British_English.gtt file, but there was no change until I reset the language to British English and then the revised text appeared.

So I conclude the text resides elsewhere for the default language - I just can't find the file where the text resides.

I'll try to see if I can live with the British_English text/keyboard language, but it bugs me to do it this way.

BTW does anyone know if there is a line-feed code for the text files so I can improve the appearance?

Keep in mind that you can always change the British/English file to reflect American terminology. For example, change FAVOURITE to FAVORITE.
