Wonder if this can be done? I have an icon under "Where to go?" called Extras. In there are my Custom POIs. You hit that and you get all the goodies we so cherish. First one is All Categories which i would really like to get rid of, but i think when i did that the last time I lost all of it, so i'll leave that one alone. What i really want to do is have this all alphabetical. I got t's the middle s's on the bottom and so on.
Thanks
Speed2, I feel your pain. I
Speed2, I feel your pain. I went through the exact same thing about 2 years ago, first with a 60CSx, then later with an Oregon 400c and lastly with an Oregon 400t. I tried all of the things mentioned above in this thread to no avail. This is a very long post but may give you some insight as to the problem.
I inquired on another forum if others were seeing the same randomness of the single .gpi file not putting the categories in alphabetical order and really got no responses that seem to fix the problem. It seems that very few people actually have this exact problem and/or go to the trouble to resolve it.
I have never used any types of alerts of any kind, no distance, no sound (.mpg or .wav), etc. just several POI files in both .csv and .gpx formats and no sub-folders are being used; all categories (individual .gpx or .csv files) are put into 1 POI.gpi file, but each file does have a custom icon (.bmp file) associated. So the root cause has nothing to do with alerts.
I tried all of the things back then that have been suggested in this thread and have been following it closely to see if I might have missed something, not yet, but am hoping that I did actually do something wrong to once and for all get this problem resolved.
After much trial and error I was able to determine that some of my custom icon (.bmp files) were playing some part and having an impact in the alphabetical order sorting. I have never used POI Loader in the "Manual" mode. I finally quit spending the time to try to investigate what and where the root cause of the problem was being triggered.
Now, I was able to force the categories into ascending alphabetical order and this is what I've had to do.
1. Create a 2nd empty POI folder for my single POI.gpi file to be created from.
2. Copy or cut and paste each individual poi (.gpx or .csv) file (in alphabetical order) along with it's associated custom icon file (.bmp file) into the newly created POI folder 1 file + 1 .bmp file at a time. See next step before doing 2nd file.
3. Here is the clincher, after transferring each single POI category (gpx or csv file) and it's icon REFREASH THE FOLDER. If you have 20 categories (20 .gpx and/or .csv files) then yes you will have to refreash the folder 20 times. Ex. copy Airports.gpx and Airports.bmp and refreash the folder, then copy Dive Shops.csv and Dive Shops.bmp and refreash the folder, etc.
4. Doing it as described, all files did appear in alphabetical order, granted a real Pain to do; especially considering any time I add a new file (.gpx or .csv) or change custom icons I have to repeat the above process.
Some things I was able to eliminate as the culprit: whether on the memory card or unit's internal memory - made no difference; number of .gpx and/or .csv files made no difference; type of file - .csv or .gpx makes no difference; was not using sub-folders so no affect there; no proximity alerts and no sound files ever used - so not the culprit.
The time and/or order that the .bmp file (custom icon file) was added to the POI folder definitely affected the ability for POI Loader to recognize just the .csv or .gpx file and alphabetize the various .csv and .gpx files in the POI.gpi folder. It appears that some .bmp files are being used in the sort order erroneously in alphabetizing the .csv and .gpx files and this is only occuring in a very few instances. As a side note, the custom icons always appear properly on the GPS, some with transparent backgrounds and others with no-transparent backgrounds.
I finally just got tired of spending the time to determine a proper fix. One thing I would suggest that I never did do is to do a comlete uninstall of POI Loader making sure to remove all registry entries and do a new install.
I am going to continue to watch this thread closely in hopes that I missed something.
Told you guys it was the dummy behind the keyboard
With all files in one folder, you can load both alert and non-alert files at the the same time with one poi loader session. After you select Manual, the next screen will show the first poi file. If this is not an alert file, select next. Poi loader will load as if in express mode (do not select ignore - it will be skipped). Continue selecting next to load non-alert files. When you get to an alert file, select distance checkbox and enter feet. Continue this process until all files are loaded. They should then show up on gps in the order (alphabetcal) that they appeared when loading with poi loader.
Hope this helps.
I tried it twice and it works. So simple too, now that i think of it. Never really paid attention, that it actually tells you what file it wants to load. Key was, leave it in manual.
AWESOME thanks jthawkin

Your problem we can't solve though. Not unless you go back to the old firmware or hope the new one will have it.

Zip Codes
I think that one cannot be fixed. But, so be it.

What about source placement?
I think that one cannot be fixed. But, so be it.
Do we want to tackle the problem of sorting in reverse order if the source is on the SD card in the GPS but the POIs are loaded into the internal memory using express mode?

How does that address the Zip Code problem?

The question doesn't address that problem.

Here's what i tried this morning. I took all my poi's that didn't require proximity alerts and loaded them in first. They all showed up alphabetically. Then i added the proximity ones separate. They showed up at the bottom of my custom poi's out of order. I then deleted them and recopied them back and they ended up at the top of my custom poi's. Ok next i renamed all the csv, mp3 and bmp files so they would all start in this case with Rest Areas. Reloaded them. Out of order again. Either they ended up on the top or on the bottom. I tried loading through the SD card also. Same effect. Doesn't seem like any one else is having this issue, so I must conclude that I am doing something wrong, I'm hoping not to have to try the gpx conversion to all these files.
Just run each file manually, then you can insert the prox dist you want for each file.
Let try again.
My POI's for Restaurants are in separate files in my computer in a folder named Restaurants (that is just for me I could call the folder Food. They are Chinese, Mexican, American, etc.
Now I use POI Loader to load all of these files in the Restaurants folder. The file is now on the SD Card or GPS and it it named poi.gpi. I rename that to Restaurants.gpi
(Now under the Restaurants category in the GPS the individual file will be in alphabetical order because that's what the loader does.)
The next category I want listed in the GPS is Rest Areas (one file, not broken down) I process that file, I use manual so I can set the distance on all rest areas to 1 mile. That file gets named on the SD Card or GPS as poi.gpi, I rename that as Rest Areas.gpi. Now the third file is Airports. Repeating the process and renaming the poi.gpi as Airports.gpi. You now have 3 gpi files, Restaurants.gpi, Rest Areas.gpi and Airports.gpi.
I look under POI's on the GPS and they are in the order as I loaded them. Restaurants, Rest Areas & Airports.
It makes no difference if you load them on the SD card, when your GPS states that you have new POI's, do you want to load them into your GPS, you can say Yes. They CAN be in both locations the GPS knows which ones to use.
Now if I have a change in the Rest Area poi's I just do that one, It will remain in the original order.
Hope that helps.
All of what u said i have bin doing, renaming the poi.gpi every time.
The difference is that when looking under custom poi's i would get Restaurants first and then Airports
for an example. I know something is wrong on my end, i've done this over and over front to back, same results. If i didn't have the proximity alerts to add i would be just fine. Any ways Thanks all for the help. a_user is looking at my files and has graciously offered his help. I'll be interested what he finds

jthawkins suggests a straightforward way to accomplish what you want. The first time I employed this method, I failed to realize that POILoader would only show me 27 characters of my file name. Because I had a very descriptive name and had added comments at the end of the file name as to what distance I really wanted, I often could not determine whether to just click "Next>" at the bottom of the screen or click the box "This file contains proximity alerts points" in order to then click the radio button "Alert whenever you get close to a point" and enter a number in the "Alert at this distance field".
My suggestion would be this. Keep the name short but descriptive so you don't have to keep another Explorer window open to see what the full name of the file about to be processed really is.
Keeping POI's in Alphabetical order
I have loads of POI's without subfolders & the way I get them all back in alphabetical order is to do my updating in one location on the computer and then when finished copy that completed POI file to a NEW location (ie desktop) and load the GPS (755) from there with POI loader. The updated files now all show up in alphabetical order under "Extras" on the Nuvi.

Organize (alphabetical order under custom POIs)
The answer is simple. Create a new Temp Folder on your desktop and copy all your POIs to it. Then use POI
Loader to install from the Temp Folder. They will install alphabetically on your GPS. When done rename the Temp Folder "POI Backup with the date" and save on your computer. This works every time.
Listing Custom POI's in "Any" order you wish
You can set the order by renaming the folders OR files. use numbers to to set the order.
Example: 1. Rest Areas
2. Parking
3. Fuel Stops
This works with both Files & Folders in your "Custom POI's"
