What GPS coordinates collection law would you like see passed?

POI for GPS coordinates required for holes dug in Iowa: Did you know that if you dig/excavate a hole in Iowa in a location outside of a city that the global positioning system coordinate of that hole needs to be provided in an official notice if known. See Iowa Code 480.1.c.(8) http://search.legis.state.ia.us/nxt/gateway.dll/ic/2009code/1/15709/17252/17600/17605?f=templates$fn=document-frame.htm$3.0$q=%5Bfield%20folio-destination-name%3A'sec_480_4'%5D$uq=$x=Advanced$up=1

What amazes me about this law is that that law makes it very easy for anyone owning a GPS to load the coordinates into a POI and track hole diggers in Iowa. Load the coordinates into your GPS and bam, average Joe citizen from anywhere in the world can travel around Iowa and keep an eye on Iowa hole diggers.

That got me thinking. If the government can pass laws requiring the collection of GPS coordinates on a location activity, what other GPS collection laws could there be?

How about a law that requires the GPS coordinate of a cop's stopped car be automatically uploaded and compiled into a public database ever time a speeder is stopped? We then could easily find speed traps. How about a law requires the GPS coordinate of a politician be automatically uploaded and compiled into a public database every five or so minutes when traveling outside the U.S.? That would help keep them out of trouble and us informed. How about a law that requires the GPS coordinate of each granted property construction variance? That might help answer whether some geographically located group is being favored over others.

But why stop there? Why not require every vehicle to report their position at all times?

Many public owned vehicles already have AVL or automatic vehicle location systems in operation but making such information publicly available on the web could jeopardize investigations. I think you need to reconsider your thoughts by applying them to you and your driving habits.

IMHO

We already have too many laws. I vote for none.

Whoa, easy. I posted this thread as a Devil's advocate to generate discussion.

and i was responding to your proposal

If you think that putting the tracks of others in a publicly addressable database is OK, do you want your position to be available in the same way?

I don't necessarily agree with any of the above. I added them for the sake of discussion to generate replys to "What GPS coordinates collection law would you like see passed?" I could have worded my original post better. Sorry.

I don't think we need anymore laws passed on gps, just in enforce all the other laws already on the books. (no texting, driving drunk,an on an on.)

This wasn't meant to be a serious discussion

I don't think VinceCANuvi was suggesting we need to start passing laws. It looks to me like he is bringing attention to a silly law that is already in place. Although I do wonder if gps tracking of politicians would reduce the number that are "hiking the Appalachian Trail."

I agree...

I think VinceCANuvi was being a bit facetious in his first post. Which would bring up an idea for another post. What kind of stupid state laws are there in your state?

Go ahead .. track my day.

Gosh, I never do anything wrong or embarrassing so go ahead- chip me and require me to report my position every 5 minutes.

The only people that fear position tracking are those that have bad intent. Our need to be protected and informed outweighs such trivial legislation in the public interest.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Instead of laws, revenue

Laws won't be the driver for this, revenue will. Tom Tom has published some of its aggregate user track log data study results, revealing some driving trends. http://tinyurl.com/yas99qe

They and others will eventually see the value of mining this data for sale to city planners, traffic studies, marketing companies and others. Yes, and law enforcement too, I imagine.

I'm clean so i'm not concerned, but ...

What makes you think Homeland Security hasn't already seen the value and/or helped fund their efforts?

Heck, they've already visited the libraries.
And there's a military version of Google Earth.

Tracking the police

Some police departments do have GPS in their cars. I would like to see that in all units. I would like to have that info available with a subpoena. You know like, "I observed the accused traveling past my location." True or False?

chip people

In a world where many expect government bureaucracies to do everything for them and protect them from everything possible, surely we should chip people too!

Think of how easy that would make the police state's work!

I want my chip

to have internet access.

But then "they" would know where I go....

My boss wishes I would go to a porn site instead of poi sites and truck sites. It would take less time!
