Garmin GPS That Can Receive Address From Other Source

The nature of my job is such that I am in the car most of the day. I do have a laptop computer with a wirelss aircard and I use a Garmin StreetPilot 2730 throughout the course of the day. The IT folks will not let me add software to that computer, however. Are there any Garmins that allow the address to be received wirelessly? I was thinking that if say a Garmin Nuvi 1690 can/could receive the address via the cell connection that it might be a time saver. I am often on the laptop and sometimes a desktop in the office and I was thinking that since I am already looking at the street address anyway on various databases, if I could simply cut and paste the address to another site that could send the address to say a Nuvi 1690 that it would save me from having to enter the address manually.

SD card?

Does the laptop have a SD card slot? If so, you might be able to transfer information between the computer and the Garmin via SD card.

Garmin GPS That Can Receive Address From Other Source

I looked a little bit closer at the Garmin webpage and it shows:

Send to GPS

Send to GPS allows you to search the Google Maps website for any business address then transfer that address wirelessly to your nüvi 1690. The point will be saved as one of your Favorites, and you can navigate to it or view it on a map.

So, actually I think this will do what I want to do. Say, for example, I stop at my office and I have six new addresses to go to. If I bring up the Google Maps website, I should be able to cut and paste the address from another website, send it to my GPS in the car, and when I get back to the car, the addresses will be waiting for me on the Garmin Nuvi 1690. I think it may be time for me to start watching for a good price on a 1690!

You may have a problem

You may have a problem as you say in your 1st post "The IT folks will not let me add software to that computer". For the Google solution to work you will need to install the Garmin Communicator onto the PC that you use to search Google Maps for the address. If that's a machine that the IT folks have locked down it could cause you a problem.

If you have a sd card for

If you have a sd card for the gps you have now.Why not structure the card to accept custom pois.Use Bing Maps to search for address and save them to the card using a card adapter from the office computer.
1.Make folder on sd card called my pois.
2.Go to Bing Maps http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?q=&mkt=en-US&FORM=BYFD and set up new list call address.Add each address to the list.
3.Once completed export file to sd card as gpx into the my pois folder on sd card.
4.Put card into your gps and run poiloader.

You can delete as needed or build a base for regular places you visit.Bing Maps retains the list so you can build on it when needed.

Here is the process for Bing Maps.

1.Create account and sign in at http://www.bing.com/maps/ .
2.Click on star icon at bottom of page and select open your collections.
3.Click on New collection and type in the information for your file and click save at bottom once completed.
4.Go to search at top and type in what you want to search for. For my example Cracker Barrel Flagstaff AZ and click search.
5.You will now see on left of screen Directions, Add to collection and Send. If you click send you will have the option to send email or to gps.
6.Click Add to collection. Using the down arrow select the collection Title you want to put it in and click save.
7.Continue adding locations to your collection until completed.
8.Click on collection again at top and click Open your collections. Select the title of your collection.
9.Click the down arrow for Actions. You will now see several selections. If you select send you will have the choice to Send wirelessly with MSN Direct or Send with USB.
10. If you select Export you will have option to save as a GPX file.
11.Click GPX. Screen will come up allowing you to save the GPX file to your sd card that you can load to your gps unit using poiloader.

Tip.
1.Open up your collections. You will have option to import a gpx file from your computer for a new collection or add it to an existing collection.
2.To view your maps in 3D you will need to install 3D. You will see 2D and 3D on the map page. Just click 3D and it will take you to the download page.
3.Once you have created your collection you can go back and click on the pin or hold cursor over it and you will see option to move the pin allowing you to fine tune the coordinates. You will have to re-save as a Gpx file for the new coordinates.

Garmin GPS That Can Receive Address From Other Source

Thank you so much. That is what I thought, too. That could be a very handy feature then. Say my wife is out and about driving and calls my cell phone and tells me that she wants to go to a grocery store, but doesn't know where it it. I could look it up on line and email it to her Garmin Nuvi 1690. That could even be pretty handy for certain businesses or public safety applications. For example, say you are dispatching for the fire department and they get a call. You could tone it out and then email the address to the GPS in a fire engine.

I bought a USB/SD card adapter from a office supply store. It is an USB adapter with a slot for SD card.

One source... http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/755109/Ativa-Memory-Ca... $5.99.

Might not work for Vista ???

It is a nice unit from what I have read about it.I plan to get another year or two out of my 265 and by then who knows what they will be able to do and get what ever model Garmin will have out there by then to do all the new things. If you look at the coverage map now http://www8.garmin.com/automotive/nulink_coverage.html it looks good.
