Is GDB 50 compatible with Nuvi 765T?

Is GDB 50 compatible with Nuvi 765 or you need GDB 55?
I will appreciate your feedback.

GDB 50 is compatible...

The GDB 50 *is* compatible with the 7x0/7x5 series...it is the GDB 55 that is NOT compatible with the 7x0/7x5

Garmin website compatibility for GDB 50:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=203&pID=8526#product...

The 7x0/7x5 series are only able to interface with a traffic receiver (GDB 50 or GTM 20) through their cradle interface and do not support traffic data through the mini-USB port like the GDB 55 provides.

eBay?

If you're lucky...or patient, eBay can work for you. I see several that sold in January for around $50, plus about $5-10 S&H. I bought my Garmin FM receiver (GTM 20) on eBay for a small fraction of what it sells for new. It works and has now been activated for lifetime ClearChannel traffic. I was even able to register its SN with Garmin.

If new to eBay, be sure to read the product description carefully and to review the Seller's Feedback, then bid (or Buy It Now) only from Sellers you feel good about.

Got my GDB 50!

Used it today for the first time and works great with my 765T.

However, I did notice something with my 765T that I'm wondering if it is normal or not. It seems to swtich between the 'traffic' map and the 'normal' map screen randomly - is that normal??? I thought it did it when there was a traffic alert, but the more I monitored it, it seems to do it not related to anything. Mostly I would set the screen for the 'normal' view and it would switch to the 'traffic' map view on its own. I'd switch it back, and after a while it would switch back to traffic mode. Once I left it in traffic mode and after a while it switched back to 'normal' map view. This was all on a 8 hour round trip today. Anyone else experience anything like this? I noticed this with both the GDB50 traffic antenna attached and the Free traffic antenna that came with the 765T.

Strange

I use my 765 mostly in "map view" mode, and prefer MSN traffic (receiver fits in the limited space in the console).

I can switch manually as expected and I am frequently in metro areas where there are some but not a lot of traffic alerts. I do not recall any auto switching.

I guess it is time to read the manual to see if there are conditions that would cause the switch to occur.

I use GDB50 with my 765. I

I use GDB50 with my 765. I also never noticed auto switch between traffic map and normal map.

Thanks for both replies!

I guess I will read the manual. I haven't seen anything in it so far that mentions anything about automatically switching. I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks

I would like to correct my previous post where I said that 765 does not auto switch to traffic map.

Today, while driving to work I noticed that when the traffic icon turned yellow, it switched to traffic map and as soon as traffic icon turned green, it switch to normal map.

So YES, it does auto switching between traffic map and normal map.

Good to know

Good information....

I will now anticipate the switch when in traffic areas.
The nuvi manual only addresses switching manually.

Traffic Map auto-switch & re-route

I'm a newb to the 765 & traffic maps, but I'm in the middle of a trip from MD to VT and found that I like/don't like the automatic re-routing with the traffic. I can confirm auto map switching and I do like that though. I probably have a setting for the auto-route but just haven't looked for it, but for example in NYC it was great...it re-routed us around a real mess (yeah, all of NYC is a real mess!) but going through CT (New Haven I think) it wanted to re-route us because of construction and it was certainly not a live traffic feed. We went through at night & on the holiday weekend so there was no construction at all & no traffic. (I ignored "her"). Even the CT am radio from DOT said there were no problems, so like I said, the traffic feed wasn't live and was a bit stale as well.

(note- my 765T is using the built-in free lifetime traffic (NAVTEQ?) svc.)

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Yes - switching is normal according to Garmin

I did call Garmin and ask about the auto switching. They said it is normal. They mentioned that if traffic is nearby it will switch to traffic map mode and back to normal map mode when there is no traffic in the area. Now that I understand it, I guess it is okay since I know what to expect. I suggested that they add an option to turn that feature off in a menu somewhere.

Just turn it off, then

Auto traffic avoidance is in the "Avoidance" menu. Just uncheck it and you will only be presented with the traffic icon and an announcement when there are traffic incidents. Tap the icon to call up the traffic display to get more information about the delay. If you want to avoid it, tap the Avoid button. I like the notices, but prefer to use my own judgement of whether I want to avoid or not. If you just click Back, it should ignore the traffic alert and continue as you were.

Your model might take you directly to the traffic screen when there is a traffic alert without tapping the yellow construction icon first. But I would assume it will otherwise behave the same way. My comments are based on a Nuvi 350 and 760. I don't know if I would like the auto traffic screen feature or not. What if the traffic is 5 miles away but you still have turns to make to get there? Does it flip back to the turn-by-turn display if you have an upcoming turn?

Not listed in Garmin's site

The only compatible unit this GDM 50 is with the Street Pilot (click Products): https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8526#productTab
But that only means Garmin's site is bunk, just like Garmin's support is these days.

However, MSN Direct service will be entirely discontinued in 2012. People may want to sell their cables now and get some money for it, otherwise it'll be just another charge in a few years.
