newbi with questions

Hi guys great site,

I recently purchased a nuvi 255W and im trying to understand how the red light camera detection works. Is this option on the unit already or do I have to download a POI file and install it with POILoader onto my gps unit?

Not on your unit.

cool
You will need to download and install the poi file to your unit and use poi loader to set the distance in manual mode... Setting it to alert when speed is greater than 0 is the better setting otherwise it will default to the quarter mile radius. The Redlight file is updated every Wednesday by MISS POI on this site.

When you use any POI file from this site is does not overwrite any original files that came with your unit. Therefore this Redlight file is not there.
Once installed go to Where to? then Extras and then Custom POIs and you should see the installed files by its POI file name. Hope this Helps?

You probably want to enable audio alerts

To get audio alerts you need to have .wav files Redlight-Cameras.wav and Speed-Cameras.wav (or perhaps mp3's) in the same directory as the .csv file. If you use .wav files, which some Garmin GPS's require, you will need to have a copy of sox.exe in the same directory as the POI loader.

Thanks for the quick

Thanks for the quick responses and information. Im gonna try and download the redlight poi file and see what happens from there

To download the redlight and

To download the redlight and speed cameras on this site you have to become a active meber or pay a small fee.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/262 . Here is something I typed out for your custom pois http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 .As stated you will need to have wav files for voice alerts or you will get the defult bong alert.

Another Newbie Question

I to have a 255W and this is my first GPS other than using Verizon VZNavigator. I also got the traffic cord on a 'steal' from Best Buy via bing.com. But anyway. I think for the price I got a good deal and will only use this on the occasional adventure. I did notice a few anomalies in day 3 of using this, it seems like the preloaded POI's are slightly wrong in my area, can I correct those? Also, I do not object to paying a fee for Red Light Camera but I want to try a free poi first if they exist. But here is the final question, my friend has another brand (mibo?) and he said if he sees a camera he taps the screen and it adds, can I do that? I can save a favorite but I don't know if I can make it act like a red light camera.

Lastly when driving around the canned POI's do not display, will the custom ones?

Thanks

How much did you pay for

How much did you pay for that traffic cord from best buy? Did you have to pay for the traffic option and subscribe for it to?

traffic cord bundled with unit

Sorry, I got the unit for $129, Bing.com who I found it through at bestbuy.com is also giving me $18 back, so I will wait to see it that happens, it is branded as a 255WT on the box, the unit is a 255W and has the g-25 or whatever traffic cord included for the fm receiver. My unit in traffic says free lifetime subscription, but it stopped working yesterday after I deactivated it, so I registered the unit and it pushed a new firmware and now it works sweet for what I need. Honestly I was going to return it until I found this site and realized the potential.

The ones that come installed

The ones that come installed can not be modified that is why we download custom pois from this site. There are many free custom pois you can download for free here.See http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles/alpha .Have no advice on the mibo. When you download the redlight and speed cameras to your unit you will get alerted when you are within the coordinates and it will also flash on the screen. The custom pois or built in pois will only display once you get close to your destination. You can zoom in real close to see them otherwise.

You have a nice unit.In case you have not discovered it yet.You can have categories for your favorites like custom pois.

Welcome to the site Phaser 77b and rig202.

Thanks charles. I

Thanks charles.

I really wanna get that red light/speed camera poi file but ive also read about having to have 5 weeks of activity on this site to get any poi files or paying the 5 dollars for the one poi or 20 dollars for a free year of poi files. Its still a very knowledgeable site. Maybe one day i will get it, in the mean time im gonna read and comment and try and learn.

Sometimes based on the

Sometimes based on the timing of your posts you can make it in 3 weeks. In the mean time there are plenty of free ones for the taking so browse around.Sure you will find something you can use.If you plan to download a lot of files in the future start out with subfolders for categories for the custom pois.It will be more organized that way.Have fun with your unit.Any questions just post.Lots of users here that will be glad to help you out if you have problems.Once you download a few you will see nothing to it.

After you do a few you will see nothing to it.If you have problems use my contact tab and email me with a few files you are trying to download.I will set them up and email them back to you. That will give you idea on how the structure looks.

Map Update Question, should I wait

Ok, I have a one time Map Download nüMaps Onetime™ City Navigator® North America NT 2010 to replace City Navigator North America NT 2010.10 Limited, Deluxe All Regions, Apr 09

I guess these are different, but anyway should I wait until right before it expires in March? or do it now? Not sure how often Maps come out.

Same as mine.

I just got a Garmin 265W and realized this also. It seems that you need to load it through the Garmin PoiLoader. When you get near the POI the proximity alert notifies you. Anyone else had experience with this? Further to that point, does anyone else want to send me the file? Please? smile

Another newbie question

Other than the custom POI's on this great site, how are the "built in" items updated. For example, if I search for a business by name, it will pull up a list of locations. As an example, I typed in Great Clips and it pulled up a list of their locations.

Are these updated only when there is a map update or are some things pushed to the device otherwise.

You got it

The built-in POI are part of the map data so when the map changes the POI data may or may not change.

BTW - welcome to the site

The latest map update is 2010.30 which came out in Nov.I would not wait until the last minute in case you have a problem.Remember map guartnee is within 60 days of first acquiring satellites not registering the unit.Map updates are suppose to come out at least 4 times a year.

As Charles said

The last update was November and they release UP TO four per year. Typically the cycle starts with the release of the annual update which is the April/May time frame.
